He made me laugh! Radio 4 and indeed his many fans will be all the poorer without 'Humph'.

GG, 25/04/2008 23:13

Humph, you will be oh so sorely missed. Monday evenings can never ever be the same again. No one could replace the delivery of the entendre that you mustered. No one could handle Samantha's exploits as you did. Thanks for all of that, and that was just the comedy. Best regards and deepest sympathy to the family and friends. John

John Murphy, 25/04/2008 23:13

So sad to hear of Humph's death! A great musician. A marvellously drole humour - I've never laughed as much as at Humph's wonderfully outrageous lines on "Clue"! Just a great guy who will be missed by a nation who loved the sound of his voice! Thanks, Humph, for brightening our lives!

Norman Richardson, 25/04/2008 23:13

I knew I was privileged as I listened to Humph blasting out the notes at the end of the Apollo show two weeks ago. I didn't realise just how much. Thanks so very much for so many years of music and laughter.

Debbie Taffler, 25/04/2008 23:13

I'm so sorry,my thoughts are with his friends and family. He will be missed by millions.R.I.P

Just heard the sad news, I have been a fan of ISIHAC from the beginning, went to see them live for the first time in Croydon earlier in the year and it was one of the funniest evenings I have had. Rest in peace Humph, you will be sorely missed by us all.

Graham Fowler, 25/04/2008 23:12

We are very, very sad tonight. Special sympathy to Humph's family and friends. Humph has given pleasure to millions - Roll Out the barrel on VE day, his wonderful music, and the best programme on the radio for an amazing 36 years. His memory will live on happily in the many recordings. Thank you, Humph.

Edwin Kilby, 25/04/2008 23:12

This is one of the saddest days of my life. No more Samantha with biggest 'its and that wonderful sense of humour appreciated so much by us over 60's. No-one can ever replace Humph. ISIHAC was the Number One. In the past you brought tears to my eyes with laughter but this time it is sadness. RIP Humph and thanks for years of fun.

Phil Perkins, 25/04/2008 23:12

I am so sorry to hear of Humph's passing, and count myself lucky to have been able to see him in Clue a couple of years ago. My sympathies to his family and friends. All I can really add is that, every time I make scrambled eggs (using the recipe in Humphs excellent collection of memoirs), I will remember him.

Paul Bines, 25/04/2008 23:11

Simply Thank you Humph for all the Music and Laughs

Stephen Barlow, 25/04/2008 23:11

It's strange to think than anyone so full of life and fun and music and silliness can be gone. Thanks for the memories Humph!

Sarah K, 25/04/2008 23:11

I was inspired by Humph to move to Mornington Crescent when I got to London. I still don't know how I got there.

Charlie Almond, 25/04/2008 23:10

Whilst I never knew you in person, I felt that I had a friend through the radio. Thank-you Humph and may your family truly rejoice in celebrating not your passing, but just how much you have left for the rest of us to enjoy. Heaven will be a truly pedantic place now!!!!! RIP Humph.

Stuart Hill, 25/04/2008 23:10

They say more people switch between radio 1 and 4 than any other channel; Hump was one of the reasons why. He will be mssed.

David Corney, 25/04/2008 23:10

Despite his age and the news of a recent hospital visit, Mr. Lyttelton's warm, imposing and permanent presence over the decades led us not to expect this. My father was a huge jazz fan and has early memories of attending Humphrey Lyttelton's live concerts at various venues in London. Although not a particular jazz fan, I have always found his Radio 2 show to be strangely compelling and inspiring. 'Humph' is therefore an artist who truly unites an often divided father and son... if it's all right with you, that's how I'll sum him up for us. May you rest in deserved peace.

Paul Evans, 25/04/2008 23:10

Just felt the need to say thank you for some great guffaws and to pass my best wishes to those Humph held dearest. With sympathy, JT

John Taylor, 25/04/2008 23:10

What will Samantha do? I hope he took the trumpet with him. Marvellous, funny and happy man.

Kevin Quinn, 25/04/2008 23:09

Very sad. That is a Northern Approach is it not? Will be missed. Ian

Ian, 25/04/2008 23:09

To sum up ones feelings in two words at this sad time is totally inadequate - after the joy you gave with sound and word, the pleasure from sillyness and irreverence and the anticipation for each Sorry I haven't a clue, you deserve a well turned phrase - but all I can think of is Thank you

Malcolm Hollis, 25/04/2008 23:09

So sorry to hear this sad news. I've listened to Humph for years - what a truly lovely man.
