Two memories, 50 years apart: 1) being taken to hear Humph and the band in Leeds Town Hall in the early 50s 2) Humph taking the trouble, late on a Saturday night after a Festival concert in Lichfield Cathedral just a few years ago, to chat with and thank the people who were working to convert the nave back to a worship area for Sunday. I can't remember any of the many other performers doing that. We had booked to see him again in July.

You were a delight to work with - the consummate professional. I am proud to have known you and to have worked with you. I will never forget you. Liz Biddle and the team at Upbeat Management and Upbeat Recordings

Wonderful radio memories of very funny and talented man. He will be missed by everyone who learned to love his style of humour.

In these days when the word "Jazz" is incorrectly applied to unswinging, turgid, pretentious nonsence, Humph was one of the few people left to show people what it should be all about. Now that he's gone, I'm sure the message will be carried on by those who have been associated with him. Yes, I'm sure Humph's legacy lives on.

Can not beleive he has gone, and if I don't want to beleive it i do not have to. The man is an icon, both of jazz and making millions laugh, including me, for decades. Never met him, those that did have told of his warmth and down to earth nature. I wish i had met him, he struck me as being like a kindly and much loved 'uncle' My youth was spent listening to 'clue', his timing and delivery unrivalled by anyone, his ad libs cutting tho never with malice. He has left us, no given us, a legasy of great music and wit, and one which we can listen to again and again and enjoy and enrich our lives forever. My sincerest thoughts and condolances to his family and friends and those that knew him, so while the short sighted tortoise mounts the helmet of time, we say thank you and goodbye for now.

A great loss for music and laughter, he was a great performer in every sense. Thank you Humph, you made me laugh.

Many people, occasionally, struggle with the definition of words, two spring to mind. Firstly unique and secondly genius, Humph even after his death has made such definitions easy....by the simple insertion of a name......his.

As a long-time fan from New Zealand now living in the UK, I had the privelege of meeting Humph at The Bull in Barnes last year, listening to him and his band live and subsequently painting a portrait of Humph from my drawings and photographs from that evening. Humph was a lovely fella who will be missed worldwide.

I recieved a text from a friend on Saturday morning telling me Humph had died and asking who will replace him. The answer is no one. Jazz has lost a great performer and advocate. Radio has lost a great broadcaster. We have all lost a witty, intelligent and warm human being, who although I never met him has been part of my life for many years via his music, books and radio programmes. I wish to offer my condolences to his family, he is greatly missed.

In celebration of a life that brought so much entertainment throughout my life.

Apart from Armstrong and Miles Humphrey has always been up there with my influences. His playing always touched and his playing style will live on and on. Some of his blues phrases still crop up in my playing. Precious precious memories. Thanks Humph.

Dear Humph, how we are going to miss you. I was lucky - and privileged - to see ISIHAC on tour at Harrogate on 12/4. It was fabulous and although Humph didn't look well, I put it down to his advancing years. He was such a character with his dry wit and perfect timing - and double entendre. They say that no-one is irreplaceable but there'll never be another Humph. I felt I'd lost a friend when I heard the news of his death. Sincere condolences to his family and friends who will miss him even more than I will. God bless.

A man who spanned generations in their shared love of jazz music at its very best and humour at its most anarchic. You will be sorely missed by all those who appreciated your musicianship, your professionalism and above all your sense of fun.
Phil Harknett, 01/05/2008 11:16
What a wonderful man. I finally got to meet him in person at the Bull's Head recently and was blown away by his excellence as a musician and as a human being. My deepest sympathy to all his loved ones.
Alison Dewar, 01/05/2008 10:53
If it wasn't for Humph, I'm not sure I'd be a musician now. He was an inspiration to us all, and will be sorely missed.

FOR HUMPH Lament Size 14 foot no longer taps the floor Mute, not muted, the well-worn embouchère Samantha sits not on the Chair’s left hand No leader has the yellow blazered band. Celebration Two hundred tunes - that is ten score, are scored in Calligraphic form for a reprise Be sure a horn passed over to ensure The trumpet sounds upon the other side. What an utter, utter loss! Such a charming irreverent man;proving that you can be funny, erudite and quite, quite rude, without being coarse. What a gift to the world he was.Shine brightly... Raymond and Sandy
