What an utter, utter loss! Such a charming irreverent man;proving that you can be funny, erudite and quite, quite rude, without being coarse. What a gift to the world he was.Shine brightly... Raymond and Sandy

On behalf of myself and my mother (who introduced me to the wonders of ISIHAC) I wanted to send my sincere condolences to his family and many friends for their loss. In the areas of irreverence, silliness and our predilictions for reading the most filthy things into what could be the most innocent of comments, we have lost a true genius. He will be missed X

thank you for making me laugh

Helen Pheby, 01/05/2008 09:34

My condolences to the family. Over the last umpteen years I have so enjoyed Humph's appearances on ISIHAC and on Radio 2. I count myself lucky to have been able to go along to a recording of ISIHAC and the roadshow and see him in action.

Such a multi-talented individual. The world is a more interesting place for having had the benefit of Humph for such a long and active life. Rather than be too sad, I am impressed and pleased that we live in a world where such a unique individual's talents were available to so many. Great stuff, Humph.

Many thousands of miles away in Canada, on every Monday night as I struggled through a time in my life when I thought I would never laugh again, thanks to the wonders of the internet, I could always rely on Humphrey Lyttleton to make me heartily laugh. He felt like some kind of irreverant and brilliant uncle. One who inspired, amazed, and outwitted at the drop of a hat. I am very very thankful for Mr. Lyttleton and the entire ISIHAC team. To later discover and learn of his brilliance as a trumpeter, band leader, composer and cartoonist has simply provided me with a great deal more admiration for someone I already hugely admired. What a glorious life lived. The world is blessed to have had him in it. Peace and contentment to his closest friends and family.

Humph, what can I say! I never met you - but you brought so many moments of happiness over the years. I will miss your wit! Very sorry for the family - but you must have great memories! God bless you all

As a teenager, and much to my mother's chagrin, I would take the train from Exeter on a Saturday to get to 100 Oxford Street to hear Humph and the band. It was always difficult to leave before the last number to make sure I left in time for the last train back home. These are memories from so long ago that I will always treasure. I always listened to the Best of Jazz in my country of choice, Canada. Such wonderful music and elegance of speech were great Humph fortés.

I first met Humph when he and his group played Jaz at Sussex Universaity in 1969. I became a devoted follower of his music and humour. I feel privileged to have known him and experience his talent first hand. Thank you Humph for all that you did for Jaz and radio broadcasting.

I fondly recall Humph's visit to Hull Jazz Fest the other year; even though he probably wanted a nice sit down, he still mingled with the crowd in the interval, shaking hands and signing CD's. A true gentleman. And being in the audience for Clue recordings was just a sublime experience! Sadly our twice-yearly race for Clue tickets is now over, but happy memories. You were right, Humph - it's been fun.

Paul, 30/04/2008 23:18

You gave us both the sublime and the ridiculous - thanks f or both. Condolences to your family and loved ones.

This is so sad Finally got to see Humph last year - the whoile band was marvellous - so grateful to have had the chance A light has gone out on the world because Humph was simply unique - who else do you know was a superb musician, DJ, expert , socialist and funniest man on radio? Mind you , he nearly killed us once as my wife had to pull over onto the hard shoulder because one of his Give Us A Clue references was so funny.... Hellava band in Heaven now

There is a set of traffic lights which I go past about once a month. I never do so without remembering the time I was sitting there when they were red, the tears streaming down my face as I listened to 'Clueless', and the driver in the car next to me looking concerned. I have now lost my three favourite broadcasters, Alistair Cooke and John Peel having gone before. Lynda

Bless you Humph, you will be missed. How you brightened up tea time with your cheeky humour! I'll always remember you with great fondness, thank you for brightening up this life.

Chris Haggan, 30/04/2008 22:47

Thank you, Humph. You won't be forgotten.

Paul Rogers, 30/04/2008 22:36

I was introduced to Humph as a young teen when he played in Liverpool. I have loved jazz ever since. The Saints are truly Marching in. R.I.P.

Fay Jelliman Harger, 30/04/2008 22:29

I remeber seeing Humph with Elkie Brooks in Chichester Cathedral a couple of years ago. They made a superb duo and it was a fantastic night to remember. I know how important Humph was to Elk. RIP. Caroline

Thank you for all the years of tears, tears of laughter and now tears that we shall miss your singular wit. It was so comforting and de-stressing to hear such intelligent humour which only the British could produce or understand, showing how our language could be warped for the comical enjoyment of all. ....and to whom shall Mrs Trellis write now?!

Chris Spratt, 30/04/2008 22:10

A light has gone out from the world, I wish him blessings.

Mavis Jean Howarth, 30/04/2008 22:10

Get ready Satchmo - Humph's coning up there to join you. Peter H. Abingdon
