Having never seen Hump before my girlfriend and I finally caught him in the ISIHAC stage show at Bristol last year. I am pleased to say that I saw him live, ok not performing jazz but still in one of the roles that he is best remembered for. I am deeply saddened by the news and would pass on my condolences to all.

You always made me laugh and you always made me smile. God bless you, Humph.

Humphrey Lyttelton was in my estimation an extraordinarily funny man. He had me in stitches when I listened to "Sorry I haven't a clue". I most wanted to attend a recording of this radio four broadcast. I wondered who he was but never really knew. Now I have found out too late and will sorely miss him and his great wit and sense of humour - what a dry wit. Goodbye Humphrey and thank you for your great contribution. You have not left a hole you have left an abyss which can never be filled and nor should it. You were unique. Let us hope that future generations aspire to your greatness and a plaque is erected along with an award fitting for your wonderful gift - entertaining and giving people an insight into genious and yu did so effortlessly. God bless you.

In reflection, I'm truly upset as this great man stood for me as a true great bastion of popular versatile and yet widespread entertainment. In a modern age whereupon we humbly and sometimes rightfully denegrate the current state of much of popular entertainment,Humph was there to celebrate the true magnificence of quality mirth and simply incomparable performance, and I will SO dearly miss what he has so majestically...and an apt verb at that...given us all. A template of brilliance? Yes. of course and I feel so much emptier for the lack of his presence. Sometimes, the great and the good deserve to be soundly remembered...and Humph gave me far more pleasure than most. Infinite love to the whole team who made it all happen. I genuinely weep in the absence for such a great talent so sadly missed.

What a sad, sad loss. A brilliant musician with an in-depth knowledge of jazz. But, as if that were not achievement enough - what a terrific chairman for "Im Sorry I Havent a Clue" - hillariously funny - life is just not going to be the same without him.

Stuart Jones, 29/04/2008 22:36

You where a reminder of gentler times and world much different than today and your canada dry wit will be greatly missed.

Carl Redfern-Moore, 29/04/2008 22:35

Humph has put a smile on my face more often than any other person I know. What I'll replace my regular fix of 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' with I have no idea, but there will never be another Humph. Rest in peace Humph and know that you put a smile on generations of listeners, both for your broadcasting talents and your musical ones. Andy.

I don't have to believe it if I don't want to.

A master of the unexpected: to the new listener , the value of the pioneers, to the seasoned fan, the excitment of new talent. All carefully filtered through the diversity of his own originality and understanding.

To our very dear, irreplaceable Humph; they say laughter is the best medicine and you were our favourite doctor - thanks for so many memories. Ron Kelly ISIHAC addict.

Humph was one of my jazz heroes and came across as being a truly modest and genuine person. He was one of the great trumpeters of my generation and I loved to hear the recordings of his band, especially in his 'mainstream' days. He will be sadly missed.

Michael Cross, 29/04/2008 20:36

Deepest sympathy to Humph's family and friends. I am just one of the many people to whom he brought so much joy and laughter over the years. He will be sadly missed. Jane x

I first heard ISIHAC age 9 and I loved it. It's hard to believe that it crashed down 4 years later. Know this, Humph- you spent your life making people happy and laugh their socks off. You will be missed.

Kieran, 29/04/2008 20:33

It is agony to know he is no longer with us, but he will live on through the recorded work he has left us. Goodbye Humph and thanks for all the fun.
