I can't believe Humphrey has passed away, he was such a part of my teenage years, i thought he would go on forever. He introduced me to Sidney Bechet and Eddie Condon. Those were the happy days, jazz clubs and trad jazz. Humph was a fabulous person and a true gentleman.

Humph got funnier as he got older. I still laugh out loud at repeats of the more recent series of ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’, as I did on Friday when I was flying back from the USA listening to ‘Sound Charades’ on my headphones. He's a lovely man. Thanks Humph

You were a brilliant trumpeter and an exceptionally funny man. Rest in peace

I will not forget listening in on a Monday evening to the rebroadcast of ISIHAC and learning that "you do not have to be grumpy to ge tthe Humph." Our airwaves will never be the same again and neither will Jazz. Although ISIHAC was my favourite, I loved the music too and Humph's style of Jazz brought me to a love of Jazz that I never had before....then again, it could be that I love trumpet music....lol. I wonder how we will get to Mornington Crescent, now?

To us, still at school in the late 50's, Humph was the man. His eight-piece was just the greatest sound around and encouraged us to form our own band. We were the support band several times at Reading and Oxford town halls and always received great encouragement from Humph and his band members. We were with them at Oxford on Humph's birthday and we played his composition 'Oh Dad!' in tribute which I think pleased him. He was very brave in 'moving on' musically when all around him the demand was for British Trad. I still play the bass 50 years on. Humph was my inspiration and I'll miss him very much. Rest in peace.

One of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. We have all lost a bit of silliness and are the worst for it.

Unforgettable - his Geminian humour co-incided exactly with mine and listening to Clue always lifted my spirits - I'm sure he wouldn't mind my saying that I would like to send my condolences to Samantha who will also be missed! God Bless you Humphrey - you did us all a power of good in this world which takes itself too seriously sometimes. Jonathon Clark, London

We have spent many many hours being entertained by Humph in his many guises, and I feel that far from this being the end, he will be 'somewhere' entertaining others as we speak. A great, great man.

I saw him in Peterborough at the December recording of ISIHAC; I shall trasure this memory. RIP

Thank you for so many hours of hysterical laughter, precious laughter.

I met Humph several times and followed his music with great pleasure from the 1950s until his concert in Fareham in January. He was such a modest man with little to be modest about. He will be greatly missed.

Our deepest sympathies to Humph`s family on the loss of this wonderful man. His writings ,music and numerous radio and television helped to bring sanity to the world. On the occasions that we had the pleasure of his company , his humour and encouragement will never be forgotten.Thankyou Humph. R.I.P. The Harlem Ramblers , Zurich , Switzerland

Having had Humph to play at Granvilles on several occasions we felt we knew him quite well-that was the sort of person he was-made you feel as though he was interested in you even though we were all much more interested in him! He was a Gentleman through and through ,to whom there seemed to be no age barriers -he entertained my ,then 6 year old, daughter with many stories during an interval and they were laughing at each others doodles! We had been trying for two fruitless years [ he was always too booked-up!]to get him back to play again and had settled on October -now I am sure we are not alone in the thought-'There is no-one that can fill his shoes' We will all miss him x

So very sad to read of the passing away of such a prolific, versatile talent. A cliche it might sound when one describes him as irreplaceable but in Humph's case there really won't be another of his kind again.Wish I could've thanked the great man himself for all of the laughs and enjoyment he gave me over the years. An astonishing talent and one who so many of us will continue to remember with deep affection.

Celestially. Humph meets Beethoven, now there's a gig!

I have listened to, and loved, ISIHAC since I was 12 years old.( I'm 48 now)Those warm, funny men have been something of a regular fixture in my life. Increasingly, over the last few years it has been Humph's show ; he just made me laugh so much. All over the country, thousands of us doubled up and helpless while straining the pasta, feeding the cats, just sitting with a cup of tea and listening to half an hour of Humph and the team.He is irreplaceable.Thankyou

Thanks for the countless hours of fun. I'll miss you. What am I going to do on Monday evenings?
