Humph, many thanks for the many laughs you have provided over the years for us on I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. I hope you meet Willie in Heaven and master the fine game of Mornington Crescent.

This is such a sad loss; only in January this year I saw Humphrey Lyttelton and his Band at the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham, Hampshire. As the show was sold out I had to wait for a ticket return and only saw the second half. I spoke to Humphrey Lyttelton in the interval, when he signed a CD for me, and he promised me a very good second half. It was indeed an amazing performance. I offer my condolences to his family, his fellow band members and friends.

It's a bit late to send a message to Humph. Funny how it takes someone dying to jog your memory and try to get in touch. He was, and because of the marvel of recording, remains, my favourite broadcaster. Thank you.

Richard Fincher, 28/04/2008 20:44

I've listened to him for years and all I can say is thanks so much for all the laughs - always looked forward to hearing him and cheered out loud at the start each week! So long Humph, you'll be missed.

Adrian Cruden, 28/04/2008 20:43

So sad to hear of the passing of a jazz icon, one of the all-time greats. I first heard him and his marvellous band at the De Montfort Hall, Leicester in 1957, backing Sidney Bechet, along with the Andre Rewelioty band from France. What a night that was ! Humph leaves a wonderful legacy of recordings and books that are his tribute.

Humph's strategic silences on Clue were some of the best radio comedy ever. He was simply irreplaceable and will be sadly, sadly missed. A. Janssen Munich, Germany

He seemed like the kind of person I would invite to a dinner party.

Steven Goldberg, 28/04/2008 20:15

I'm sorry too hear of the sad news. My heart goes out to his family and friends. The "BEST" radio comedy show will not be the same again. He will always be "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" to me. I think up there Hump will be there with the lovely Samantha sitting on his left hand. Long live Hump from one of your biggest fan. Nick Podesta (aged 34)

NICHOLAS PODESTA, 28/04/2008 20:15

So sorry. Wonderful that he worked until the end. Great life, marvellous man.

My first recollections of Humph are his brilliant adjudications on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, which I developed an addiction to during my mid-teens. Only later did I learn that he was also a genius with a trumpet. We were privileged to see him in both guises, with his band at the Lowry Centre in 2003 and last month at the Millenium Centre Cardiff. Thanks for all the fun Humph, you won't be forgotten!

Sarah Birch, 28/04/2008 19:48

I am not a jazz fan although that's where I became aware of 'Humph'. I will remember him always for 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue'...he will be grately missed by me and will be irreplaceable. My best wishes and condolences to all of his family and friends. Keith Nicholas, Chelmsford, Essex.

Keith Nicholas, 28/04/2008 19:24

I took my mum to the Bridgewater hall last year to see Humphrey and his band. She was thrilled to see him again - she is 77 and used to be in the George Mitchell Singers during the 1950s and remembers seeing Humphrey at Ronnie Scotts. I am the next generation but thought he was fantastic and I loved his sense of humour. We were so sorry to hear of his death and our sympathies go to his family. My dad died 7 years ago - he collapsed on 16th April 2001 with an aortic anuerysm and died following surgery three days later. It was an awful shock and my heart goes out to Humphrey's family at this sad time.
