I had the pleasure of meeting Humph at the first Lockerbie Jazz Festival in October 2006, which I helped to organise. He played a great gig with his band at the Town Hall and in conversation with him afterwards he was very encouraging. This October will see our 3rd Festival. As a keen listener to all sorts of jazz right across the spectrum I owe a great deal to Humph who, through his Best of Jazz broadcasts introduced me to many musicians I may otherwise have missed. He is a great loss to British Jazz; I doubt we will see his like again. My sincere condolences to his family, and many friends.

You have been making me laugh, regularly, for most of my life. Thanks Humph.

John Walker, 28/04/2008 15:05

I hope that Humph's loquacious rythms are now jovially exchanging witticisms with Louis Armstrong, Willy Russell, Spike Millingan, Alan Coren, Ned Sherin, Tony Hancock et al. As his wit and mellifluent sonorous voice will sorely be missed. Sunday's now will never seem the same again. Thanks for the memories...!!!

A truly great musician and gentleman who brought happiness to so many people. Humph will be greatly missed.

Daniel Monaghan, 28/04/2008 14:56

Will be missed. Thoughts go out to all his family.

Being a small time jazz/blues singer /writer myself I love the way Humph seemed to enjoy life and kept that wonderful sense of the absurd - I never missed a show as i knew at some point during it I would be laughing out loud with him- highly embarrassing going down the M4 on a Sunday lunchtime. In these days of ridiculous political correctness a bit of double entendre gives us all hope that the country has not been completely straight jacketed!! He will be missed with great affection CJ

I will always remember the sound of his voice and the presence felt in from I'm Sorry I Haven't a clue. I never really knew much about him until now, yet I feel I will miss him. I am sure his family are very proud of him and wish them my deepest sympathy.

I remember Humph becasue my father somehwo fixed it for him to play at my school. Mill Hill. We had a music club that offered the standard public school mix of chamber music and violin concerta - all were badly attended. When Humph came to play in 1971 or 72 just about the whole school turned out. Thank you Humph for that and for all the laughs on Radio too.

News of his passing brought a tear to my eye. I will miss him bringing a tear to my eye for laughter! You wont be forgotten Humph! Enjoy looking down at the rest of us idiots!

A consummate musician, sophisticated curmudgeon and all round total entertainer, the like of which we are unlikely to see ever again. I will remember Humph through my enjoyment of Radiohead and my tapes of the side-splitting and achingly brilliant "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue". Humph, you will be missed, not least by Samantha.

Tony Korycki, 28/04/2008 14:26

RIP If the BBC has any grace it will retire the show. I will also miss my late night drives home listening to your R2 show. I feel privileged to have seen a live recording of ISIHAC. I would not be lying if I said that I went there to see you rather than the other talent on hand. So farewell then Humph 'Good Grief!' That was your catchphrase.

Steve Veal, 28/04/2008 14:19

Sincerely sorry to hear of Humphs passing over the week-end. I grew up listening to his marvellous music and fantastic radio shows over the last thirty years. He was a wonderful performer and a genuinely talented man. He will be a hugh loss to all his fans. I'm sure he's now playing trumpet with all those other great late jazz entertainers.

Tom Gillitt, 28/04/2008 14:16

How I will miss him! He and John Peel were my two greatest radio heroes. They are irreplaceable.

Rob Smeaton, 28/04/2008 14:09

will leave a great gap in the humour and music of this country -thanks for all the joy you've brought us

Peter, 28/04/2008 14:06

Having been brought up with ISIHAC since I was a child, I thought that Humph would go on for ever and ever. Sympathy to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. A fan. James

James Fibbens, 28/04/2008 14:05

A wonderful man and a real highlight of my year as far as ISIHAC was concerned for the past 35 years.

I started listening to jazz in the early sixties and one of my introductions to it was reading his early books and hearing him on the radio. Seeing him play at various venues he and his various bands, always with great musicians, always gave a good night. His attitude and writings rose above the perpetual infighting among jazz fans and writers, and I felt was a personal example. I last heard his band play earlier this year; a great band playing really strong with a really good feeling. Thank you Humph and all the great musicians I heard in your band.
