The funniest man ever to speak into a radio microphone. Will be hugely missed

What a lovely man he was. He will be missed but frequently remembered by many.

Humphrey was the first person that I remember really bellylaughing to on the Radio, and now, over 30 years later, I find him even funnier. He was a genius
Andrew Wright, 28/04/2008 12:45
A childhood, and continuing, favorite of mine for over 60 years. Such a talent, both in music and in wider fields of entertainment. He was a pillar of British Jazz, and a genuine man.He will be sadly missed.
Michael Kelly, 28/04/2008 12:45
The loss of his voice from the airwaves will be something we shall all take a long time to recover from.
Ian George, 28/04/2008 12:33
It was a very sad piece of news about 'Humph's demise. I wish I could think of something only half as witty as he used to say to cheer up. He will be sorely missed without any doubt. A fine Jazz Musician and a fantastic radio host - irreplaceable. The angels, will be in tears of laughter since last Friday.

I've spent many hours since 1967 listening to "Humph" on the radio. A man who amused and informed me. A gentleman who cannot be replaced and will be missed by many. Probably starting something up there with Willie Rushton. Condolences to his family and friends From "A fan"

Humphrey Lyttelton Could have been a City Automaton. Instead he blew his horn When the British Jazz revival was born.

I am so very very sad to hear of his death. I have seen him play twice, in Ludlow and in Shrewsbury last year and was hoping to see him again in Ludlow this May. I luckily met him after the Shrewsbury show. He was such a lovely person, so talented, so modest so witty. I will miss hearing him on the radio. God bless his family

Thank you for all those silly, happy laughs.

I last saw Humph on stage at the Hammersmith Apollo on 3rd April. When he played us out with We'll Meet Again and got a spontaneous standing ovation, it brought a lump to my throat. When out driving, Humph forced me to pull over and stop on more than one occasion, because I simply couldn't stop laughing. Thanks for all the laughs, Humph.

Thanks for everything Humph - you were a great entertainer and wonderful human spirit - listening to the radio won't be the same without you! Enjoy your next gig - wherever it is.

Thank you Humph, for making me laugh. There can be no greater epitaph.
Bill Teale, 28/04/2008 11:53

Dear Jon Naismith and the ISIHAC team, Today, I received a email from a Mrs Trellis, she said: "I'm saddened by the news that Humph has passed away - he was a great act to follow! - how I shall miss listening to his witty banter, and to his many reply's, well so long my friend and thanks for all the fish. ISIHAC, May it continue" Humphrey Lyttelton, I remember seeing him in action on the Trumpet at The Brecon Jazz Festival, and also seeing him when he's visited Bristol with his band. As I'm a keyboard player and also a Presenter on the radio, well.. I would have loved to jam with him. ISIHAC team, keep on making the series, I'm sure that Humph would have wanted you to continue. On Boxing Day 2007, I listened to the wonderful program of Humph in Wonderland - well, at least he's now made it to his own Wonderland.. Humphrey Lyttelton - RIP ISIHAC - keep on going! On my weekly radio show called BRISTOL SOUNDS, I will be paying a tribute to Humph, by playing some of his music, as well as some great clips from ISIHAC. Hope you can tune-in? A great loss to British jazz. A wonderful human being and a great comedy artiste. RIP Humph

I am deeply saddened to hear that Humphrey Lyttelton has died. I would like his family to console themselves by knowing that his long-standing enhancement of my life through ISIHAC will always be remembered, treasured and appreciated. There are many times when he has reduced me to tears of laughter, which has generated a ridiculous fondness for a man I've never met. In my head I can hear 'The Last Post' played in his honour, on kazoo and swannee whistle. I will miss him immensely.
Andrew McIntosh, 28/04/2008 11:27
We saw Humph play only a few weeks ago in Maidstone. He provided us with decades of entertainment and his death is a personal loss to us, and so many. The champagne of life is a little flat now. Bless you Humph.
Cheryl & Barry, 28/04/2008 11:27
Like millions of others I have derived immense pleasure over many years from listening to Humph on the radio, both as presenter and musician. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time who will, I'm sure, give the old boy a fine send off, aided as ever by the lovely Samantha. Farewell Humph
