I started listening to jazz in the early sixties and one of my introductions to it was reading his early books and hearing him on the radio. Seeing him play at various venues he and his various bands, always with great musicians, always gave a good night. His attitude and writings rose above the perpetual infighting among jazz fans and writers, and I felt was a personal example. I last heard his band play earlier this year; a great band playing really strong with a really good feeling. Thank you Humph and all the great musicians I heard in your band.

I was lucky enough to see Humph in the flesh so to speak at the Rhyl Pavilion recordings of ISIHAC.As a fan of the programme for many years,it was a pleasure to see Humph and the cast up close and personal.I will never forget that night. As a fellow musician,I only hope that I will leave a gnat's crotchet of the good vibes and fond memories that Humph has given us all over the years.

Radio 4 will never be the same again. A tremendous broadcaster with a zest for life and an wonderful sense of humour. Who will keep tabs on Samantha now? With sincere condolenses to his family.

I didn't know Humph personally only through our relationship on the radio but I feel very sad at the loss of this great man. His capacity for fun was enormous and his timing immaculate. Who but Humph could look over a script and feign ignorance of the filth that had just emanated from those lips? He was always very patient with people at the stage door and kindly signed some Clue bits and pieces for me and these are things that I will treasure. For those who feel sad like me take heart from the fact that his greatness will live on through his recordings and we can all enjoy Humph for many years to come. Chairman Humph we will miss you.

A great loss. His unique dry sense of humour, superb timing and capacity for fun will not be easily replicated. He stood out from the crowd. Now we are just left with the crowd. I will miss him.

He will always be remembered by my wife and I for the hours of laughter he has given us over many years of listening to ISIHAC Roger Nash

Roger Nash, 28/04/2008 13:40

I saw Humphrey Lyttleton and his band when they visited Falmouth, in Cornwall, when I was a boy. At the time I was struggling to learn to improvise passages on my clarinet - the night in front of Humph and his band proved inspirational and I was able to improve tenfold - I shall never forget that feeling of watching such an electric performer!

Julian Pepper, 28/04/2008 13:34

You will be much missed. Thank you for some amazing comedy Alice x

Alice Trow, 28/04/2008 13:21

I had the great fortune of seeing Humph and his band touring with George Melly and his band. It was a wonderful night. Now, sadly both men have left us. I came to ISIHAC quite late in the day and regret missing out on so many years of entertainment. Humph was a true great and will be sorely missed.

He bought me so much joy and laughter through his music and his humour and impeccable timing. He was a warm, shining light in a cold, dark world. I will miss him very much. Thank you Humph for lighting the way in this dreary world. Rosie x

Humph has brought many a smile to my face. I am a life long ISIHAC fan, its difficult to imagine no new series. What will Samantha do? A great man and a great life.

Willam Job, 28/04/2008 13:19

Rest in Peace... Will miss your unique sense of timing and humour...

86? said my girlfriend; "Thats a good innings, why are you so sad?" It would not have been any easier if Humph had lived to 5000. Its the passing of such a funny, talented, and no doubt, lovely chap, that is so very hard to accept. I know he was old and I often wondered how long he could keep it up for (stop it..!) but I feel that I speak for a lot of people who never met him; I feel as if i did. RIP Humph. xx

Terry Perring, 28/04/2008 13:09

It was a sad day when Humphrey did his last Best of Jazz on radio 2 but I had hoped he might still do the occasional programme. His programme was a great joy to me over the years (also "clue") and I always looked forward to Monday evenings. A great great person. Very much missed.

John Calder, 28/04/2008 13:07

Very sad to hear the news. The passing of a great man - how on earth he fitted all he did into only 80-odd years is a mystery. He will be sadly missed.

Kevin Foad, 28/04/2008 13:02

RIP Humph, A man with genuine talent, wit and humour, you'll be sadly missed.

Thank you, Humph, for the laughs, the gigs, the records and especially for the fantastic musical education provided by forty years of the Best of Jazz: a monumental, life enhancing course of advanced musical appreciation for which I will be forever grateful.

Bob Jiggins, 28/04/2008 13:00

Thank goodness he lived!

Frances. Nagle, 28/04/2008 12:51

I was so sorry to hear of Humph's passing on Friday. He brought a ray of light to my day on Monday evenings and rarely have I laughed so hard at a radio programme. He will be sorely missed by me and so many others: a real loss to us all. My thoughts are with both his home and "studio" family.

James Padfield, 28/04/2008 12:48
