Like millions of others I have derived immense pleasure over many years from listening to Humph on the radio, both as presenter and musician. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time who will, I'm sure, give the old boy a fine send off, aided as ever by the lovely Samantha. Farewell Humph

Humph, if I had a tenth of your charm and talent I would be a great man indeed. You will be fondly remembered and sadly missed.

Britain has rarely produced a Jazzman of Humph's stature and he gave forty years of great pleasure with his radio programmes. I will sadly miss him, but will never forget him.

About ISIHAC, I'm sure Humph would've been the first to say 'the show must go on'. But how on earth do you replace a man and a host of such distinction, who, as Barry Cryer said, was so much the hub of the show? For 35 years we were spoilt with a radio show of such high quality, which can never, despite the future efforts that will no doubt be made, be quite the same again. A true polymath and a great gentleman. RIP

I was saddened to hear of Humph’s passing. His contributions to the worlds of jazz and comedy were enormous. I feel privileged to have seen him on stage on the most recent ISIHAC tour, which he clearly enjoyed as much as the audience. My deepest condolences to his family.

Humph has been a companion to my enthusiasm for jazz all my adult life, firstly by seeing him play, starting in the 70's mostly at the 100 club, and through the 'Best of Jazz' on radio which both entertained and widened my interests in jazz. I now feel privileged to have seen Humph play at Barnes on March 18th which must have been one of this last gigs. Understandably the trumpet playing might not have been so strong that evening but the wit was on top form and the band itself outstanding as usual. A great leader and enhancer of other lives. With gratitiude and love.

Humph was a true great. I once saw him perform at a concert in Fowey, where he announced - I would like to introduce you to one of the top 6 female jazz singers in the world. I can't remember the names of the other 5, but I would like to introduce Stacey Kent' What an amazing evening that was. The last time we saw Humph was doing a live ISIHAC at Plymouth in March - pure Humph. We will all miss him.
