Humph taught me much about Jazz, and it was delight and some regret that I discovered last year that I could access his Best of Jazz via the Internet, and could have been doing so for some time. I used to listen avidly in the Uk, and have learned and loved so much from him that I will long be grateful. An amazing man, a terrific trumpeter and a deliciously funny speaker. The music on the next plane of existence can only be dreamed of.

Humph, I will always remember you for the hours of laughter you have given me since I first heard I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. Your wit and timing was unsurpassed and I know your memory will live on for many, many years. God Bless to you. John x

So sad that Humph has gone; I'll miss that wonderful, silly, rude, clever sense of humour. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

I am a Dutch fan of ISIHAC (since 1984). Humph's death is the end of an era. Thanks for the countless laughs.

Elizabeth and I were both so very sad to hear and read about the news of Humphrey Lyttelton passing away. We send our sincere thoughts of condolence to his family, friends and contemporaries. To us Mr Lyttleton was not just a Musician, Broadcaster and Writer but also an inspiration in how to keep young by enjoying each moment with those who are around you and care for. Because of this we feel in our hearts that, if we may call him "Humph" will aways be around as he has left so many happy, fond and wonderful memories, in his music, words and how he lived his industrious life. Thank you most sincerely to his family for allowing us to share so much of his life. Elizabeth & Robert.

It was always a life-affirming experience to listen to a man with as much natural good humour and silliness as Humph. He has made me laugh so many times over the years and will be terribly missed.

Way, way back when I was a kid of 15 or 16 (I'm now 68) a schoolmate introduced me to jazz via a Humphrey Lyttelton record he had. I later bought a Parlophone single (The Bear Steps Out and Saturday Jump). I still have that single and I still have an abiding passion for jazz. News of Humph's passing saddens me and my condolences go out to all his family, friends and fellow musos.

He was the bright star in my life as the source of true humour and I hope and pray that this is how he will always be remembered. A fan who never had a chance to shake the great man by the hand. But wishes his family all the best in strength and support in this difficult time

Fond memories of Humph and his band at the Sunday evening concerts in the Liverpool Empire during the early fifties. Humph and his band - including the excellent Wally Fawkes - would leave the stage for a mid-concert break - possibly for a quick visit to Ma Egerton's pub near the stage door - leaving his excellent pianist (John ? ) to hold the fort. I have tried for years to recall the name of the pianist who I believe died at an early age from a drug overdose, so the story went a the time.

Humph was one of a kind and I always relished the start of a new season of ISIHAC with his dry and naughty humour. He will be sorely missed by millions of fans. Rest in Peace. Peter

As a regular at Humph's Jazz Club all those years ago, I have continued to enjoy hearing him in the USA, via the Beeb. It is a great loss to Jazz, and to the world of humour . I loved his insight into the new musicians but most all I loved Humph for daring to be Humph! There will never be another to replace him, he was truly unique and we all loved him!

More than any other performer, Humph brought true comedy to my life through ISIHAC. He will be sorely missed.

A wonderfully talented man ... a true original, in so many ways. Irreplaceable ... a national treasure. Wit and jazz personified! Thank you, Humph!

Here we are clinging to the bottom of the world here in the Antipodes, and although I never got to hear Humph in person, he was a part of my life. The warmth of his personality came through in his music and voice, and his writing. I will never forget him. Thanks Humph.

What a great man! Somehow I thought Humph would be here forever. I loved his music and ISIHAC, even though he once nearly knocked me off my bike in his Volvo! Such a loss. Sadly missed but rightly celebrated.

A lovely man. I will miss his presence on Radio 4.

I have been a fan since I was 17; I remember meeting him at the Blue Posts in a break at the 100 Club; I shyly introduced myself, and offered to buy him a drink. Nol, he said, let me buy YOU one, so I had a half pint of the local ale. On the second break I offered to return the favour. "Oh, very well," he said. "I'll have a double Scotch." He was an icon and (along with Chris Barber and Ken Colyer) one of my first musical heroes; he introduced me to the music of Ellington and Armstrong, and made my life significantly richer. My condolences to friends and family; he was a one-off; certainly one of the gods' better inventions.

Humph's passing is going to leave an ENORMOUS hole in my sources of supreme joy in life. I'll probably get taken to court for admitting it, but I've recorded almost every one for about twenty years. They are the greatest anti-depressant ever! Also the reason why I'll keep my tape deck going until I join the man himself. How lucky we've all been. Thank you, Humph. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
