Humph's passing is going to leave an ENORMOUS hole in my sources of supreme joy in life. I'll probably get taken to court for admitting it, but I've recorded almost every one for about twenty years. They are the greatest anti-depressant ever! Also the reason why I'll keep my tape deck going until I join the man himself. How lucky we've all been. Thank you, Humph. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Humph was a national institution - dry, intelligent and very funny. Clue will not be the same without him and maybe it should not continue without him. RIP Humph - and, wherever you are, keep them laughing!

I've been listening to ISIHAC since 1972 when I was at school. Thank you.

Gerald Binmore, 28/04/2008 01:25

A life with more twists than a round of Mornington Crescent. Unbelievably, no more burnt teas and tears of laughter on Monday evenings. No other radio programme has had my eyes still stinging even when the Archers started after the news. Thanks Humph for some of the most achingly funny moments of my life. What a life the man had. The final line of the BBC tribute says it all. "Humph" excelled at each of his contributions to British life. Mind you, I can just hear him now saying in those rich gravelly tones "what a load of twaddle" RIP Humph

Ronnie Fisher, 28/04/2008 01:09

A year before I moved to England from the States, someone mailed me some cassette tapes of ISIHAC. I was hooked. Six years and a return to America (and lots more cassette tapes) later, I can't believe this sad news. Many, many thanks to a man who helped introduced me to the England that I loved.

Dzesika, 28/04/2008 01:08

47 cassette tapes full. That must be at least 94 shows I've got to listen to again. Good on you Humph, you and the team make the drive to work palatable. As the Archangel of fate blows the trumpet of eternity and the angel of bliss flags that there will be harps from here on I see it is the end of the show. Goodbye from Oz Humph

My big regret with Humph's passing is that I never got to see him perform with his band nor see him at any of the ......Clue recordings. I shall buy his biography and be reminded of his wonderful humour and zest for life. Thank you Humph for helping me to laugh during times when nothing and no-one else did. I miss you already.

Evelyn Stace, 28/04/2008 01:00

One of the brightest and most comfortingly funny, clever, mischiievous but also gentle and warm presences on the radio. Always been a huge fan and will treasure all the highlights to be found on the ISIHAC compilations, the accompanying books I own etc. A wonderful and inspiring person. RIP.xxx

Emma Russell, 28/04/2008 00:57

Radio 4 will never be the same again. You'll be sadly missed Humph.

Shirley Sheppard, 28/04/2008 00:41

He was largely responsible for my education - in my teens in the late 60's early 70's I remember him playing so much contemporary jazz, always awake to the new. He was a great player, band leader, quiet revolutionary, wonderful broadcaster, wit, evangelist, human. I shall miss him greatly. He was a great man and very loveable.

Amazing Broadcaster I Love I'm Sorry I Havn't A Clue, won't be the same without him. RIP Humph

Humph was a dear, dear man who was not only an amazing musician but who also had an incorrigible sense of fun and brought real old-fashioned laughter to millions. I shall miss him tremendously.

RIP Humph. A very sad day.

Rob Appleyard, 28/04/2008 00:21

It was all such a pleasure. I hope - and suspect - it was for you, too. With thanks, appreciation, smiles and laughter.

The Duke Ellington Society of the United Kingdom (DESUK) has lost our Honorary President. We will miss him at the forthcoming "Ellington 2008" international conference to be held in London from 22nd to 26th May. We will ensure that Humph is not forgotten over that weekend and in the years to come. He would appreciate our playing of the Ellington composition "Farewell Blues". To paraphrase Duke, we can say of Humph that all of our 240 members "Loved him madly". Peter Caswell, DESUK Chairman on behalf of our committee and members.

Peter Caswell, 28/04/2008 00:16

I was introduced to I'm sorry when i was around 10, by my mother, who had been an avid listener ever since it's creation. Since then i have acquired all of the series released by the bbc on either cassette or cd. I am devastated at Humph's passing and wonder if ISIHAC will be able to continue without his deadpan charisma and wit; I am equally devastated i was never able to see the man himself at a live recording. His memory will live on in so many people's minds and hearts, and the recordings of ISIHAC will remain some of my most cherished possesions for ever. Thank you, Humph, you will always be remembered.

There will never be a funnier man with a lovelier, cheekier voice. Life's worst moments are re-aligned by "one song to the tune of another" or the Ball announcements. May you Rest in Mirth.

Jane Corrigan, 28/04/2008 00:01

I wish miss you and your wonderful humour SO much Humph. I listened to your radio show every week without fail and just loved your cheeky quips. My heartfelt sympathy to your family and loved ones and sincerest condolences; you've lost a smashing bloke and thousands of people have lost a great broadcaster and wit. God rest you Humphrey Littleton

Estelle Lewis, 27/04/2008 23:54

I'm glad I got the chance to hear you play live and also managed to get tickets to recordings of ...Clue. You were a great performer at both and will be missed by many many many people. Thanks for discovering Stacey for us. God Bless you Humph. Jx
