"Talking of celebrity endorsements, I saw a packet of sausages with a picture of Antony Worrall Thompson on them. It said "Prick With A Fork".....Bit harsh, I thought" "Listeners may be interested to learn that Colin recently debuted his Trumpet Concerto in A and E. At least he did until the other patients complained. And he was in the right place when they needed to remove the trumpet!" "The undoubted Master of Give Us A Clue was Lionel Blair. The look on Una Stubbs' face as he managed to pull off Twelve Angry Men in under two minutes...." "Listeners may be interested to learn that a music publisher has expressed an interest in publishing all of Colin's sheet music...." "Let's meet the teams....A veritable "Who's That?" of British comedy...." Some of my favourites.....

This is very sad news. Everyone who loves jazz, good radio, and simply being alive and laughing, was hoping that this lovely man who has been part of our lives for 50+ years, would be OK and then conrtinue as before - as if for ever. We won't hear him again but what memories we have! The past two days have been a mixture of laughter and tears - not that different from the effect he has had on many when he was alive! to those closest to him and who will miss him even more, my deepest condolences. Graham Mytton I once had the privilege of SMing for Humph at the BBC in 1965. He was doing a jazz programme and I was playing nthe discs.

Humph played at our Jazz Club many times as a guest with the Zenith Hot Stompers-including a presentation on his 70th birthday, when he also designed a motiv for our club, which is on our banner.Last night at our "gig" his many friends signed a card with their memories-please let me have an address to post this. Vernon and Veronica Ashley, Little Witley Jazz, Cleeve,Well Lane, Little Witley, Worcester WR 6 6LN. (Telephone 01886888834)

I am one of thousands I know who are devastated at the loss of Humph, his irreverant silliness was such an enormous tonic to those of us who tuned in joyfully to the madness that was ISIHAC. Many happy half hours spent in tears of mirth, at the sheer breathtakingly audacious wonderfullness of Humph's hosting of the show. And as for the music...pure jazz bliss. Thanks Humph, for giving us all so much.

My brother took me to our local record shop in 1956, in the days when they let you take 78s into a little room and try them out. I bought a Bill Hailey record and brother bought "Bad Penny Blues." We'd been home no more than half an hour before I realised he had the bargain. Since then, Humph's been part of my life although I never really met him. So simply, a big "thanks, Humph," for all that jazz, and the wit.

Our family were privileged to see 'Humph' in concert and recording his radio programme. He was an amazingly talented man. He spent time after his concert spent time talking to and encouraging our young son who was learning the trumpet. What a wonderful , kind gentleman!! His wit and musical talent will be sadly missed. Thanks for the joy and happiness he spread.

A sad loss of a great man. I've been a fan for many years and I shall miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I first heard dear humph on the "wireless" when I was about 10 or 11 years. He demonstrated how he bent the notes whilst playing a bugle call at Caterham barracks, thereby receiving a reprimand ! I have never forgotten that day and that sound, it was the start of a lifetime of listening and playing. Thank you Humph for the wonderful times you have given me over so many years. May you rest in peace.

For most of my life ive been listening to radio 4, the archers when i was a child up to pretty must the whole days broadcast now im 25. However the one show I have always looked forward to was I'm sorry I havent a clue. Humph was a truly fantastic man whos comic timing and love on innuendo always made me laugh, even when I was feeling the lowest. My deepest sympoth to your family and friends and my kindest thanks for all the smiles. Fred

I will miss Humph hugely - his humerous, self-effacing, lightening fast wit, combined with his slightly grumpy persona as ISIHAC chairman made him something very special. He became part of the family whenever ISIHAC was on - absolutely unmissable, as well as a very talented jazz musician. A Mrs Trellis of North Wales has written in to complain that the show has 'an enormous fistful of rampant innuendo rammed into every crack', but only a truly filthy-minded person would think such a thing Humph - you will be greatly missed - RIP

I am just so sorry that Humph has gone. He seemed wonderful through and through. There can be few people who gave so much enjoyment to so many people over such a long period. It must be a kind of genius to be such a wonderful musician and the greatest wit on the airwaves. I am sure his brilliant timing was the essence of both. I wish I had known him and am both happy and sad for those of you who did.

Tony Balazs, 27/04/2008 14:52

Sincere condolences to Humph's family, friends and colleagues on ISIHAC. Humph brought such elegance, wit and wicked fun to this delicious programme which I've enjoyed for crikey, more than 20 years. Thank you, Humph.

Susie Cornfield, 27/04/2008 14:49

For the many hours of laughter, thank you.

Michael Saunders, 27/04/2008 14:47

I'm so sad. Humph you were a true legend, one of the very who truly appealed to everyone regardless of age. You will be missed so much, my Monday nights will never be the same, your memory will last forever, thoughts of course with your family at this time, they can take comfort in knowing how many peoples lives Humph touched, much love and well wishes Greg Mcquillan (samantha fancier)

Greg Mcquillan, 27/04/2008 14:44

Humph gave me more pleasure, fun and laughs over the years than any other single element of Radio 4, he will be missed beyond measure. To his family; my sincerest condolences, but always remember that he will never be forgotten or how much he meant to us, his fans.

FRANCIS LYNCH, 27/04/2008 14:43

I held an incredibly boring job at one time, and one of the things that kept me from running out of the building screaming was that I could get BBC 7 on my computer and hear episodes of "Clue" regularly. Humph and the gang helped me stay sane, and God bless them all for that.

Sean Walsh, 27/04/2008 14:36

Farewell Chairman Humph. Although we all know that nothing lasts forever, there was something about your voice, music and wit that seemed about as close to eternal as it's possible to get. Having listened and laughed with ISIHAC since it started way back in '72, it's become on of those things about life that one truly treasures. You'll never be forgotten. Thanks for everything! Gary

Gary Mewis, 27/04/2008 14:31

He leaves a space that can not be filled, that will preserve his memory.

AK, 27/04/2008 14:27

Des Fitzgerald, 27/04/2008 14:23

The first time I heard Humph was in the 1950s, when I was a child. I loved his jazz interpretations and the sheer exuberence he brought to his work but it was as a radio broadcaster that he came into his own, creating a unique style that combined risqué double-entendres with playfulness and innocence in a way that could offend no one. While I remember him with affection, my sense of loss will be mitigated by the sheer pleasure of listening, again, to someone who was a master of all that he did. RIP, Humph
