Saddest news, I am so sorry.

My world at the farthest corner of the old Empire (NZ) was the richer for hearing Humphrey's humour whenever I could. For some reason, known only to our national broadcaster, the show was broadcast at midnight, I think on a Friday night. He shall be missed.

I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue always made me laugh so much I cried. I feel very lucky to have seen Humph preside over two recordings and the stage show and see him play the trumpet at them. I accidentally caught his jazz show on Radio 2 one night and enjoyed it so much I made sure to listen to it again.

I was so very sorry to hear of Hemph's death. He has given me such pleasure and laughter via ISIHAC and such knowledge and musical pleasure via his music and radio jazz shows. He felt like a friend imparting pearls of humour and wisdom in equal measure. My deepest sympathies and condolencies to all close friends and family. I will always carry the vision of the cornet player on VE day in Trafalgar Sq..

As we journey through life if we are fortunate, there are those individuals who provide an initiation into an art form and who thoughout our own voyage of exploration continue to give us insights and perspective on how what we "discover" fits into a context. Then there are those individuals who do this and can at the same time preserve a sense of fun and irreverence at the folly of humankind. Thank you Humph.

My son and I have been listening to ISIHAC since he was little (he's now 25). We are both saddened to hear of Humph's death. Sunday lunchtime (which I refused to leave the house or a radio for) will never be the same again. Condolences to all his family and friends.

I was lucky enough to see ISIHAC after listening for so many years, so glad I did. It was as good as I had hoped, and I had high hopes! Such a hard act to follow (I do hope they do follow). I think and hope he knew how much the audience loved him, probably more than anybody else on the radio, by far. Will be missed terribly. David

Although I never met 'Humph' I felt he was almost a member of my family having listened to him chairing I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue since its first broadcast. It was only in later years I appreciated his contribution to British Jazz Music. Thank you Humph for the pleasure you have given me over the years

I have to admit that I never really knew much about Humph except what I heard on Clue, which I have been a fan of for many years since I was little. I haven't been able to listen to it for a while because I have no radio at university, but when I did listen Humph really brought life to the show. He was just as entertaining, if not more so, than the actual 'games' themselves. Mondays at 6.30 will never be the same.

Humph rescued many of us who in the early days were of the opinion that Jazz could only exist as Traditional or Modern. Through his broadcasts over the years he conveyed the wonderful range of music that exists within Jazz. Humph also analysed the human condition perfectly. Its the absurdities and humour that carry us through. Thanks Humph

Very sad news. A unique talent and the main reason why ISIHAC became a legend. A truly infectious enthusiast for jazz too. I don't feel qualified to comment on the calligraphy...

Humphrey will live long in our memories and is already so sadly missed. His unique style with a special tallent for bringing humour to the airwaves could brighten up even the dullest day. 'He touched' us all in many ways that no others could even get close to. Long live his memory.

Yet another great Icon has passed this year and another that is close to my heart. First, Arthur C Clarke who opened my mind to the wonders of the universe and now Humph, who filled it with humour :-) Such a sad, sad, loss to the world, to music, to his listeners, to radio and of course to his family, to which my heart goes out. RIP Humph

I was very sorry to hear of the death of Humph. What an inspiring, intelligent, professional and lovely person he was . I last saw him in December 2007 at Malvern, (Worcs) Theatre. His wonderful humour shone through, and he was as witty and alert as ever!! My condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed!

You brought great happiness to our lives. Monday evenings will never be the same. The music was also fabulous. Thankyou for the memories. Our prayers are with your family at this time.

Humph was so special to me. His acerbic wit and fun filled my Saturday afternoons with sunshine. I remember once waiting on a gloomy winters night in the car outside Hull railway station for a loved one. ISIHAC was cheering me up when I noticed through the mirror that a woman in a car parked behind me seemed to be having an apoplectic fit in the divers seat. After the next Humph "howler" I realised that she, like me was being warmed and tittilated by Humph. Always remembered with a smile and completely irreplacable, thanks for keeping me happy Humph!
