I'm immensely saddened to hear of Humphrey's death. His wit on Clue made me laugh out loud more often than I care to remember and one more than one occasion I found myself amazed at what he got away with saying on the show. I will miss him on the radio.

Anthony Cunningham, 26/04/2008 20:46

Humph, thank you for the pleasure your music and Chairmanship of "Clue" has brought to the world over the years. May you rest in peace.

John & Alison Lees, 26/04/2008 20:43

A great gentleman of jazz who will truly be missed.

Reg King, 26/04/2008 20:42

A beautiful man, as they say in Ireland, who did miracles in making jazz so popular .

Peter Quinn, 26/04/2008 20:40

Thank you for the laughter on the way home from work. kindest thoughts to his family and friends.

A dear man of immense humour who enriched many a Saturday afternoon for us with his antics, he'll be listened to for years to come and enjoyed by millions more

Neil & David, 26/04/2008 20:39

He will be very sadly missed in my house, both for the jazz and the silliness of ISIHAC which he so admirably encouraged whilst never appearing to do so. One of the few legends we had left. With all sympathies to Humph's family. Best wishes

Gerard, 26/04/2008 20:38

What sad news.. it seemed he would go on for ever. He was a genius in the world of jazz, comedy and broadcasting and did an immeasurable amount to brighten the lives of millions of listeners. When will we see his likes again? Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I sat at Humph's feet (literally) as a teenager when I first began to love jazz and I've listened to 'I'm sorry I haven't a clue' with glee and unrestrained belly-laughs for so long - through the bad times it was the only thing that could make me laugh. He was up there with the best and a little bit of me has died with him.

Myra Fonceca, 26/04/2008 20:32

We joined Humph and the others in Harrogate recently and had a wonderful evening. We always listen to ISIHAC and usually end up crying with laughter which is how Humph should be remembered. Sadly a tear of sadness this time. Rest in peace Humph.

I grew up listening to Humphrey’s music and wit, and will be eternally grateful for the smile he put on my face and the music he put into my heart.....I am so glad my young son saw him on stage presenting ISAHAC...we can reminisce for years to come and remember his warmth and humour that touched us all.

I first saw and heard Humph and his band 50 years ago and owe his programme 'The best of Jazz' a great deal for my lifelong appreciation and love of Jazz. His chairmanship of 'Clue', other broadcasts and of course his introductions and participation in those wonderful Jazz625 TV sessions, some of which I have on video. Thank you Humph. R.I.P.

Humphrey Lyttelton will be so much missed. I was proud to be at the 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' show on 12 April in Harrogate. It was pure fun and of course 'Humph' had the audience in the palm of his hand! To hear him play at the end was the icing on the cake . He was the guv'nor!

Val Harwell, 26/04/2008 20:26

My thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and friends of Humph.......

David Wilkinson, 26/04/2008 20:25

I've never felt so sad at the loss of a 'public' figure befiore. My thoughts are with all Humph's family and friends.

Keith, 26/04/2008 20:21

I was twelve when my father took me to the Feastival Hall in 1954 to see and hear the Lyttleton Band. I nn the late 1950/1960 the 100 Club and Conway Hall where my regular haunts. I still play the vinyl !!. Today is the day I feel I have lost a friend who I never met. Well Wally, Johnny, Bruce and now Humph that famous front line are playing together again somewhere. This is a sad day for me. We must of course all celebrate the life of a great man of Jazz.

PETER LOWREY, 26/04/2008 20:21

So many people will feel something is missing, but all will be glad he was here.

Pauline Haley, 26/04/2008 20:20

My lifelong love of jazz began with a concert by the Humphrey Lyttelton Band in the Civic Hall, Croydon in about 1955. Soon after the concert I withdrew 30 shillings from my Post Office savings account and bought the LP Humph at the Conway, recently I purchased it again, on a CD. Humph has always been around in my love of jazz and BBC comedy/quiz shows for more than 50 years. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Derek Helling, 26/04/2008 20:20

Humph made a huge number of people extremely happy for a very long time (possibly even including Mrs. Trellis). A life very well lived, by anyone's standards. Jon

Jon Wallis, 26/04/2008 20:20

Damn shame; I never really got around to hear his sound as a jazz musician, but I spent many happy hours listening to ISIHAC and Humphrey's gentle wit. It just won't be the same without him.
