Thanks Humph for decades of fun, you are a role model par excellence and will never be forgotten. As the traffic warden of time puts the sticker of fate on the windscreen of eternity, its farewell old timer. Tony

A leviathan of broadcasting, music and humanity without whom my life will be the poorer. My deepest sympathy to his family and my deep gratitude for the joy he gave me/

I was so very sad to hear of your passing. You have given me so much laughter over the years & will be sorely missed. RIP.

I grew up surrounded by the kind of music made so successfully by Humph and his contemporaries, and their great mentor Louis Armstrong. And as an adult I learned to appreciate his gift as a radio personality and comedian. This is a very, very sad loss (as severed links to childhood always are) and in this household he will be very much missed.

In Irish we say, 'ní bheidh a leitheadh ann arís". There will not be his like again. A wonderful entertainer has left wonderful memories. Thanks Humph.

A man who brought a light to my life, and occasionally had me pulling my truck into laybys so I could allow the tears of laughter to run free. I'm as old as Clue is, and I doubt anyone could do justice to Humph's role on Clue. Sadly missed. A man who brought laughter to millions, and fine music to the world.

A tremendous legend and legacy. How will Samantha survive without him?

Although I'm about 80 years younger than you, I'll miss you.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of Humphrey Lyttelton. I 'know him' through IASIHAC. He was always a joy and a pleasure to listen to. There was real affection from the panel and the audience and it was infectious. Absolutely unique and special. Although he was physically 'old' his wit was sharp as pin and so dry! He has given me hours of pleasure and many millions like me. I hope that this is some comfort to you all. Regards. Mark

A sad day for us all. Radio 4 will never be the same without him. His legacy will live on, so that we can forever enjoy Humph at his best.

I first came across Humph as a teenager, exploring the world with my transistor radio. I came across his jazz shows and I received a wonderful education in both jazz and how to approach a new subject. This was in the early 1980's and I've followed Humph ever since - becoming a devotee of ISIHAC and seeing him perform with the much missed George Melly. A great privilege to have experienced this.

Humph, thank you so much for all the laughs - you are irreplaceable, and Radio 4 will never seem quite the same again!

I fills me with great sadness that a man of such stature has passed away. I was lucky in attending several ISIHAC recording and his dry humour was a joy to behold. My condolences to his family

I'm rubbish at putting feelings down on paper. It only ends up sounding cliche'd or contrived. There isn't a word that can accurately convey how I feel, knowing he's no longer in the world. I never met him, and am not sure whether I could have dealt with the meeting had it happened. He was an hero for both his music and his comedy, comedy which got me through my A levels back in 1994. Still, Heaven will have more swing and less inflated pomp and purity, if he's got any say in the matter.

To one of the few men who have made Sunday morning coffee fly out of my nose with laughter. I will miss you and send your friends and family my very deepest sympathy xxx

As I am only 16, I've had very little opportunity to truly appreciate the genius of Humph, but since I was very young I have enjoyed listening to his music, laughing along to "I'm sorry I haven't a clue", and of course reading the witty notes of Chairman Humph. It was with deepest regret that I read of his death, and I believe that he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. I had the good fortune of seeing him play with the band in August last year, and upon speaking to him afterwards he struck me as one of the few real gentlemen left in the world. Goodbye Humph.
