Thanks Humph, for all the smiles and laughs you've given me over the decades. You'll be missed.

In 1952 or thereabouts, Humph. visited a sick children's ward at Ruchill Hospital in Glasgow where my younger sister was untreatably ill with T.B./meningitis.My mother always said that part of the miracle that helped her recover, was the brief stop on our hero's knee.

Back in the 80's I was playing in a local Dixieland Band in Kendal and had the very great honour of being part of the "warm-up" band. I was very nervous. Humph came into the band room and I was tucked away in the corner tuning my guitar for the second set - Humph said to some of his band " What a cracking little band !" It made my night ! He was a lovely chap and we will all miss him.

My thoughts are with Humph's friends and family during this time. I couldn't believe it when I heard that he was dead. I feel that he still had so much more to give. A wonderful man who will be remembered for his championing of jazz, his marvellous trumpeting and his piercing wit. Rest in Peace.

Thanks Humph for being an inspiration to a young trumpeter, who still has in his case the cartoon you drew for him after a gig at Bath Theatre Royal several years ago. Monday nights on Radio 4 will never be the same again.

Pure Comedy Genius! Driving home with clue on the radio is dangerous as it’s so funny! Hunph, thanks for the laughs, you will never be forgotten.

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to see the ISIHAC team in top form in Plymouth. I'd been trying for years to get tickets to see the show without success, such is the popularity of the show. My Mum and DAD used to listen to ISIHAC years ago and I've grown up listening to the programme. Humph was as sharp at the show as he ever was and his passing will leave a massive hole. To all Humph's family and friends, we send our deepest sympathy. Be assured that Humph bought so much fun and laughter in to our lives and will be remembered with much affection in our little corner of Cornwall. Best wishes, Malcolm and Elizabeth Butler

Humph, I will miss your comic timing and ability to make me laugh out loud endlessly. No longer will I have to pull over whilst driving and Listening to Sorry I haven't a Clue, for tears of laughter obscurring my vision. We shall miss your voice over the radio, many thanks for the memories. Rob aged 30 but a fan from a very young and impressionable age...

A great musician and broadcaster who will be sadly missed, but always remembered.

I am in my early thirties, and only discovered 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' a couple of years ago. Since then I have heartily enjoyed the many many recordings of this wonderful show. Humph was the keystone to the show, a true master of his talents. Humph brought myself, and many many others, so much joy. I am very sad at his passing, but when I think back to some of my favourite moments of 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' a smile creeps back onto my face. Many times his wit and humour has had me crying with laughter. What greater talent can any man possess than that which make others so very very happy. We will all miss you very much.

So sorry to hear the sad news. As an avid listener of The Best of Jazz from almost the beginning there is now a vast emptiness that I know many jazz fans will feel. When the Listen Again on the net meant you could hear Humph for ''the best part of an hour'' over and over was always a worthwhile bonus. The recent BBC4 film about Humph is sure to be repeated soon, I hope.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Humph, he was fantastic to listen to on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. I will miss his humour.

Goodbye dear friend. I felt sure you'd see out the century, but you packed a lot into 87 short years. Thanks for friendship, laughs, music and everything.
Jeremy Hardy, 26/04/2008 15:30
yes - he's finally alighted at Mornington Crescent... very sad. Apparently the funeral arrangements are already underway. There will be various prayers, and Colin Sell will set some of them to music. The final hymn will be Abide With Me (sung to the tune of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life) and, out of respect, Mr and Mrs Bennett-he-was-a-truly-great-bloke (and their son, Gordon) will be late as usual... RIP Humph - heaven just got funnier.....

Gooodbye old son and thanls.

Very, very sad news. Humph was an institution, an inspiration and and the man who introduced me to much fine jazz via his long running radio programme. He is simply irreplaceable. God bless you.
Simon Spillett, 26/04/2008 15:23
A great loss of a British institution, he will be sadly missed.

I went to see Humph at the Concorde Club in Eastleigh on April 9 this year with friends and I'm so glad that we saw him one more time.He was absolutely hilarious between numbers, the band was great, and I wish I could play trumpet with one tenth of his ability-I've been trying for about 30 years but I don't think it's going to happen now. Sorry to see you go Humph, thanks for everything, and my condolences and very best wishes to your family.

I've been an online Listen Again fan of ISIHAC since 2002 and I nurtured a dream of coming to see Humph and the panel record the show live someday, but I knew time was against me. I'm grateful for six years of laughter and joy and a lifetime to come of happy memories (and treasured recordings!) A great spirit, a life filled with music and fun, a legacy of merriment unparalleled. My condolences to his family and friends and to all who will miss his voice as much as I will.
