Wow! What a lot of wonderful messages. We have been fortunate enough to see Humph regularly at the 'Bull' at Barnes over the past few years and have loved every minute. He made you feel so much a part of it all. None of this 'big celebrity' nonsense. He was always happy to chat and we were amazed at his phenomenal memory. He seemed to remember every gig he had done and every musician he had played with. We will really miss everything about him- his humour, talent, amazing energy and great choice of band members!! Thank goodness they are still going to be there every month. Roll on tomorrow night. Humph will be there in spirit. Alison and Art Raine.

One of the funniest men on the Radio who will be sorely missed.

Helen Storr, 09/06/2008 12:50

Just thanks big man, just thanks.

Jim Maguire, 08/06/2008 22:04

A tremendous man. Quite simply, a wonderful person with bags of energy and ability to restore many a flagging soul in search of succour - a smile and a good belly laugh - in these trying times. I only knew of the man through the briefest of musical snippets on radio/TV and the like, but his performances as the anchor of 'ISIHAC' were wonderful and utterly compelling. I was very, very sad to learn of his demise a few weeks ago and I was surprised, and proud, to then subsequently learn that he had once rejected an offered knighthood. Good on the man! If only there were more like him prepared to make a stand against the triviality and insincerity of some of the acts and decisions of our so-called leaders and 'celebrities' these days.... Humphrey, I salute you in your passing and I will remember you with great respect and fondness when I tune in to the tribute radio programme(s) broadcast on 15 June. Keep on smiling and playing wherever you are as you look down on the rest of us, and remember how loved you will always be.

ROSS PENDREY, 08/06/2008 10:11

I was lucky enough to have seen Humph at one of his last shows (ISIHAC Eastbourne) He was great and will be missed by us all.

Trevor Humphrey, 07/06/2008 21:23

I rememmber him when i was a kid making my parents laugh, thinking "now thats clever" then he made me laugh and kept doing so for 30 years. Ive suddenly grown very old and will have to go and check I have sufficient recordings yo keep me happy another 30 years. What an ineffably brilliant man

David Ranby, 05/06/2008 21:28

Thankyou Humph for giving me such pleasure over the years. to paraphrase another "Radio 4 will never be the same again".

Bill Kirkham, 03/06/2008 23:18

Through the magic of a high-speed internet connection I have enjoyed the wit and banter of Humphrey Lyttelton on BBC Radio online broadcasts of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. Someday I hope to travel through London and visit many of the stops mentioned along the way to Mornington Crescent. From a fan in the rainy Pacific Northwest, Oregon, USA

Dear Webmaster This is not a tribute to Humph but a nerdy "techie" message: Your Shop pages have a default height of one screen BUT some of your items are longer e.g. the 2-CD sets. EITHER you need to increase the pixel height of any specific page that is too long because e.g. the track listing on the second CD of a set truncates after just a few tracks, or any review text below an item only has a line or two before it terminates, OR you need to re-jig the layout to fit on one screen e.g. double-column the track listings. I know you have a lot more to think about than this detail BUT as the gorgeous Samantha probably hasn't got so much to do perhaps she could get on top of it and do it very nicely!

tHE FIRST JAZZ I EVER HEARD WAS HUMP SINGING AND PLAYING " CLOSE YOUR EYES" IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF A LOVE AFFAIR WHICH HAS LASTED FOR 50 YEARS THANKS HUMP FOR THE HEAVENLY SOUNDS

JIM FRASER, 03/06/2008 13:27

What's British? I hear people ask. Part of what made post-war Britain has just passed away - and a big chunk of my life. Raised in London and a self-taight trombonist and jazz fan, Humph has been with me since I first went to 100 Oxford Street and played at all-nighters at Ken Colyer's club. His reasoned, enthusiastic but un-pretentious voice has been with me for the last 40 years through good times and bad. During lazy afternoons in France listening to tapes of Best of Jazz, while working late on Monday evenings as a journalist, DIY-selfing building a nursery for our kids. BOJ has always been the high-spot of the week, the touchstone, the contact with the music I love. I always imagined that when Humph told his parents (a family with distinguished forebears) that he was going to be a jazzmen, they said `Humphrey, we don't mind what you do, but please do it well.' Didn't he do well? My sincere condolences to Humph's wife and family. Thankfully I have my tapes, CDs and records - Humph lives! PETER NEALE

Like many of my age Humph's hit in 1956 with 'Bad Penny Blues' started me off with a love of jazz music which has remained with me ever since. A fine musician with eloquence, wit and bags of charm. What joy he brought to so many. Thanks for it all Humph!

Mike Moroney, 02/06/2008 14:45

Humph was my original inspiration. I heard him when I aged 13 and was playing trumpet by 15, as sson as I could afford a horn. I met him and played with him a few times. What a truly great human being! I am 71; Humph has been (perhaps unfortunately) responsible for me inflicting my limited trumpeting skills on the public for 56 years. He would cringe! But I loved him and always will.

Jon Stone, 02/06/2008 07:40

As a boy after a short period with rock n´roll I discovered jazz through Humph´s "P.T.Q. Rag". That´s now almost 50 years ago. Since then he was one of my favourite musiciens. And jazz became one of the most important things in my life. Thank you, Humph

Peter Scheel, 01/06/2008 14:06

Also a musician, albeit in the classical world, but also an (ex-)brass and jazz player I will miss hearing Humphs voice on both his Jazz shows and on Clue. I have only recently discovered him (a couple of years ago) through the BBCs wonderful online "listen again" features, since I am not British nor live in the UK, but his personality is one I have grown to admire greatly. I am sure he would have been genuinely surprised by all the fuss, but that makes him all the greater. Thank goodness we got to know him, better late than never! My heart goes out to his family!

With grateful thanks for providing hours of fun, enjoyment and education.

Colin McNamee, 31/05/2008 18:51

Still mourning a witty, funny, talented human being. He brought endless joy in music and laughter. A heartfelt loss.

Lynn Spreyer, 31/05/2008 10:29

Living in Sweden and being far to young to follow ISIHAC from the start I was not more than a year ago introduced to the show by a friend. It might well be the funniest thing I ever heard, and a lot of it was because of Humpf's timing. I hope they keep up the show, but who could possibly fill those shoes? I guess that heaven is a funnier place now, than it was before...

Jonas Lejon, 30/05/2008 11:25

I'm sure that Humph would have said "The show [I'm sorry I haven't a clue] must go on" But how they will fill such a great man's shoes I don't know! I will always remember him for his charm and his lightning wit - his mind was as sharp as ever right to the end; I can just imagine him arriving at the pearly gates and delivering a side splitting quip. Heres to you Humph!

Paul Churchill, 30/05/2008 10:59

How I will miss Humph! He was unique, witty, brilliant in all that he did. He had absolute perfect timing and delivered his lines in such a manner that laughing was the least one could do let alone double-up helplessly as most of the time I did. A great muscian as well. God Bless all of the family - how my life has been enriched listening to him over the years and surely his family was doubly so.
