Humph-you will be sadly missed,a true legend and irreplaceable
Martin Teraud, 26/04/2008 14:27
To Humph's loved ones: I am aware, of course, of Humph's renowned musical career, but it was through I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue that I came to know of and admire him. While Barry, Graeme, Tim & co always provided superb entertainment, I used to tune in to ISIHAC equally to savour Humph's dry asides - perhaps, latterly, even more so. His unique brand of resigned humour is irreplaceable, and its sharpness was even more remarkable given his advanced years. I enjoyed particularly his continued verbal demolition of Colin Sell. From a fan's point of view, it's hard to see how my favourite radio show can continue. To Humph's family and friends, you have my deepest sympathy at the loss of this extremely special man, who never seemed to lose contact with the absurdity of life. RIP Humph. Thank you so much for the countless hours of pleasure you gave to all of us - you will be sorely missed. Love, Gerard

Like millions of other listeners to Radio 4, I feel grief as if for a member of one's own family. He was a father figure to us all, who inspired affection like no other. I send my deepest sympathy to his family.
Edward Lipscomb, 26/04/2008 14:21
One of the few TRULY FUNNY characters of Radio 4. I shall miss him very much. He could knock spots off some of today's individuals and their attempted humour.

I was incredibly saddened to hear, this morning, of Humph's passing. My best wishes and condolences go to his family. He was a truly unique and beautiful performer and the world will be lessened without him. See you in the big Mornington Cresecent in the sky Humph

Waking up to this news made my heart sink. We all loved the wicked sense of humour that crossed generations. My 8yr old loved the radio show as did my 12yrold, 20 and 24yr old and then me, the half a century mum who will really miss you. God bless

Humph was a trully inspirational intelligent cultured human being. From the Conway Hall to BBC4 he remained the same brilliant musician (timing is everything) and all round good bloke. It is often said "He will be sadly missed" and in Humph's case it is true for so many varied folk. Humph will always be warmly remembered. He will be able to collect up those pennies from the Conway now.

Oh Humph, You will be sorely missed in my household when "Clue" came on there was always a deathly hush. I can only hope that you keep the Saints in stiches. God Bless, Steve

A colossus of a man and a colossus of a show! He will be sorely missed by all who ever had the pleasure of listening to him. Either playing music, or presenting ISIHAC! I will never pass by Mornington Crescent without thinking of him fondly.
Michael Commerford, 26/04/2008 14:11
Rest in peace. You will missed by millions, most of all by the lovely Samantha who will need a new hand to sit on! At least Willie will get someone to play Mornington Crescent with now...

I just loved him, I'm sorry I haven't got a clue would have been nothing without him or his wit, and his music how could anyone not have known him or forget him, we have so much to remember. He lived a life worthy of remembering, we must celebrate that.
Christine Cook, 26/04/2008 14:08
As well as being avid listeners to I'm sorry I haven't a clue we were privileged to see him live with his band on many occasions. Apart from his musical talent, he was a wonderfully funny man, but above all radiated warmth and kindness through his humour. His band were obviously so fond of him and we always wished the evening could have gone on for much longer. He always signed his CDs for everyone with such good grace. Truly a wonderful man, as well a remarkable entertainer. I hope Samantha carries on looking after him.... We will miss him immensly and wish strength.to his nearest and dearest. to his nearest and dearest.

I probably wouldn't even know who Humph was if some lovely person hadn't introduced me to ISIHAC a few years back. Luckily I did have the chance to experience his wit, intelligence, comic timing and unique style, for which I'm very grateful. He was a complete legend and will be sorely missed. We love you Humph. Maybe gone, but never forgotten.
Sarah, 26/04/2008 14:04
I'm very saddened to hear of Humph's passing. I grew up listening to his jazz programmes with my grandfather and have passed my own love of the music to my son who now plays cornet. As a fan of comedy, too, I was delighted to hear him on every episode of ISIHAC that I could catch on Radio 4. No single broadcaster has captured my affections in the same way or to the same extent. My sympathy goes to his family for their loss. Ian
