Humph will be sadly missed. I grew up with his music from a teenager to a pensioner. Since the last 10 years I have recorded most of the "Best of Jazz" programs, they form a history and a useful record of jazz development as seen by a very knowledgable master of the art. My only regret is that I missed some of his last series, I do hope the BBC will see fit to repeat them as a tribute to wonderful man. My deepest sympathies to Humphs family and close friends Mike.

I was very sad to hear of Humph's death. I'm glad he was with his family at the time. I'll always remember the last show at the Lowry when he was in sparkling form. You'll be fondly remembered and sadly missed Humph, keep playing the trumpet in heaven. Chris

I learned of Humph't passing this morning. What a terrible loss to everyone who heard him play or listened to ISIHAC. A sweet genius. Thank you Humph for so many laughs. I will try at retain a capacity for silliness.

At 16, I think I was one of Humph's very few teenage fans - barely any of us listen to radio comedy, let alone would have known him by name. But his wit, his music and above all his passion for what he did, right until the end, will always inspire me in life.

What a full and worthy life..I cried when I heard the news...Bye Humph..May you make the angels smile too.

very saddened to hear about Humph. Anyone who could appeal to my grandfather in the 70's through to my own children now and make us all laugh has to have been rather special.

I recenetly saw Humph and the ISIHAC teams at the Apollo Hammersmith after many years of listening on the radio and trying to see a show being recorded. It was a joy! The evening ended with Humph playing his trumpet and somehow it was the perfect fianale. I can't find the words to express how sad I am today for the loss of this man.

Thanks for all the silliness and fun.

A very sad moment, but such an incredible life to be celebrated. I saw several "clues" last year, all of them fantastic, but the stand out moment was at the Brighton comedy festival when after the show, Humph led the crowd in an impromptu trumpet performance of "We'll Meet Again". It brought tears to my eyes then and I was lucky enough to see the gang again in Manchester and Peterborough. Sadly, all the fans who never saw "clue" live will never get to experience the magic of Humph. Thank you for bringing such pleasure into my life for the past 30+ years.

Humphrey will be well missed from all his fans in Australia- may he rest in peace after a full and productive lifetime of service to music and the arts.

A more gentle, kinder, intelligent, caring and witty friend one cannot find on the radio. So many times when life gets on top you only have to catch his humour in IASIHAC and the next thing you know your spirit is soaring. My deepest wishes to his friends and family. A life so well lived - may his God bless him

I was so sad to hear the news late last night. 'Clue' was required listening in our house. We have all the CDs and so will be able to enjoy listening to him for years to come. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Humph introduced me to the joy of jazz, way back in 1950. I've played trumpet since then, and consequently owe him an unimaginable debt. I knew him; he was always so friendly. An enormous loss - my condolences to his family, and also to the members of his band.

Give 'em a jazz solo in the skies, Humph!

Be silly on the other side Humph!

Humph, you were a huge influence and a smashing role model. I shall miss your voice greatly. Chris
Chris R. Wright, 26/04/2008 12:18
We shall not see his like again. I wish I could scatter witty insults like he did, and that my silences make people laugh. How did he do that? He will be missed

Long live Humph.
