Can't be true! Must be another of his quips - after all, I can't imagine life without ISIHAC, and I can't imagine ISIHAC without Humph. Great thanks for years of happy listening. I felt I knew him

Thank you for making me laugh so much over the last 15 years since I discovered '"I'm Sorry..." Like a fine wine I appreciated your wit, banter and trumpet playing as I have got older. I only hope Samantha isn't too disappointed for too long - after all I hope will still still on his right hand! Stuart

Stuart A McCran, 26/04/2008 13:08

Thank you for bringing me so much laughter you can not be replaced

Jenny Matthews, 26/04/2008 13:04

I count myself priviledged to have sat and heard him play and heard him perform live. Hail and Farewell, Humph. My sympathies to his family

Hi I am more than sad to hear of Humph's passing. He changed my life completely by agreeing to be special guest on my debut harmonica album " Building Dreams". Web:- http://www.barrybwm.plus.com I knocked about with Humph and the band for 25 years. In the end, people used to think i was one of the band! My heartfelt condolencies please to Susan, the entire band and everyone else connected with a great man. Barry Watson.

Humph will now be fronting Gabriel,s Trad Jazz Band! Will he I wonder, be playing "Onions"? A favourite when as an EX FAA Apprentice in 1953 I attended the Southsea Savoy Ballroom. Is 'Onions' arround now? Good vibes Humph, in your new venue. Jack Weaving

I had the thrill of seeing Humph at Redhill on 20 th March. We have few thrills here in Redhill. Thank you, Humph. You will be very missed.

When I heard the news yesterday (25/04/08) I was distraught. Today I'm just devastated! I have been trying to get tickets to ISIHAC for some time and now never will - even if the BBC try to carry on without Humph. I saw the band twice last year and was looking forward to seeing them again soon. The current band was the best ever. Despite my feelings on ISIHAC, I do hope that they can carry on in some form. I read all the posts on the BBC web site, but no-one mentions "The Jazz Scene" and "Jazz Club" broadcasts on Radio 2 in the 60's. Humph was the compere on these (before the also missed Peter Clayton took over) and I learned so much about the music from him - and not to worry about the catagories that even today so divide the jazz audience - in my formative years. And what about the "100 Club"? Would that valuable institution have been there to support the traditional jazz revival if it hadn't started off as the Humphrey Lyttelton Club? It seems that we have a lot more to thank Humph for than it at first appears. With apologies for any word botching in my comments....

Thanks for it all,Humph

I live in the US, and I've been listening to Clue online for years. Humph had that rare gift of making me laugh until I cried. It doesn't work the other way around, though. Farewell. We'll miss you over here, too.

This is one of the saddest days of my life. I'm not a particular jazz fan but I grew up on Humphrey's stylish and singular brand of humor on Radio Four and in a way the things I find funny and peculiar in life I owe to him. His love and use of language was superb. He simply had no peers. Thankfully we are left with a wonderful archive of his wit and wisdom. I will remember him always.

Eugene McVeigh, 26/04/2008 12:49

Very sad. Sunday mornings won't be the same . Thankyou Humph for the many years of music and wit. My thoughts are with his family and the team of ISIHAC God bless you all.

Jennifer Baillie, 26/04/2008 12:47

Barbara and I will miss you dearly H. even if you did think I was 'iconoclastic'. Dick and Barbbara Hawdon.

Dickie Hawdon, 26/04/2008 12:47

A very sad loss, but still funny and trumpeting until almost the end. A master of the art of British humour, who created a uniquely endearing image over the airwaves of a wonderfully unenthused & sceptical observer of life's skewed logic and absurd routines. He is irreplaceable.

Geoffrey Hall, 26/04/2008 12:45

He made me laugh with the one sentence he ever spoke to me personally - I'll remember that every time I listen to Clue. Thank you to Humph and his friends and family for this life-enhacing life.

Heather Malcolm, 26/04/2008 12:45

Humph, Thankyou for introducing me to the joys of jazz in the 60s and for teching me to laugh when laughing can be so very difficult. Rest in peace with the trumpets of heaven and pray for me. OA
