Like I suppose many people on this site, the enjoyment Humphrey Lyttelton brought to my life was through I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue rather than necessarily his music. I am very saddened by this loss; for me, it feels very personal as I grew up with the show, from before I even understood the jokes, but laughed anyway to playing Mornington Crescent with people who should know better. Humph's grumpy presence held it all together, and brought a lot of laughs to me and my family. Sadly, sadly missed

I only ever saw him live - once. At the Gosport Jazz Festival in 1995. As I bought my copy of "Three in the Morning" he asked if I wanted it autographed. He then proceeded to take the time to inscribe it with the date, the place and a short message before signing it and thanking me for buying it. With a busy crowd he could have just dashed off a scrawl - but he stopped for a moment and in his way - said "hello". A true gentleman.

We were so sad to hear of the death of Humph. He has brightened our lives with his music and the incomparable 'ISIHAC' for as long as we can remember. He will be greatly missed by millions of people. Sincere condolences to his family.

Thank you Mr Lyttleton for the many tears of laughter you brought to us with ISIHAC and it was a pleasure, no an honour, to have been present to your live show in Birmingham last year and to be present to hear A LEGEND play. Some time around 1980 Humph played a gig at Kidderminster, guesting with a local band. I was keen to take photographs and a friend wanted to make a recording for hospital radio. During the interval Humph agreed to adjourn into a side room to be interviewed. I was trying to take pictures by available light, without flash, which meant a lot of fiddling with camera settings. My friend was not totally familiar with his recording equipment and spent some time setting it up. During these preliminary pauses Humph sat patiently while we murmured our excuses. Instead of saying "I haven't got time for this - come back when you've got your act together", as some more irritable jazzmen might have done, he chatted quietly and then, when we were finally ready, talked to us warmly and humorously. I had been told that as a band leader he was a stern taskmaster but in our ungainly presence he was nothing but a gentleman. A.J.Worrall, West Midlands.

Thanks Humph for so much laughter; many tortuous Monday night commutes were transformed into a 30 minute journey of hysterical laughter, thanks to you and the team of I'm Sorry I haven't a clue. I could barely see to drive for the tears running down my cheeks, as you deliverd yet another well timed quip, or signed off with a double entendre about Samantha, There will be much mirth making in heaven now, God bless you.

Humph meant so much to me, from my first Clue episode (when I was about ten and I didn't understand the more risque jokes and thought his voice sounded like my granddad's) to the recording I attended last series (when he was much taller than I expected, and so kind to me when he signed my cassette case). I'll miss him so much. There were few like him, ever. Suzie x

It is rare to be saddened by the death of a man who one has never met but that is the case for me. The world has a little less warmth and humour in it today. Congratulations to Humph on a life well-lived and deepest sympathy to his family.

Humph was great person. Heh was President of the Society for Italic Handwriting for many years. I am Secretary and wish to send condolences and flowers on behalf of the Society to his family. Does anyone have any contact details? Thank you.

Humph was a true genius at everything - Jazz to "Clue" - we are all saddened by his departure but forever grateful for him brightening our lives. Deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
