I taped nearly every Monday night's "Best of Jazz" for over 30 years and listened whilst driving to work and back home. It is difficult to express how much I miss "my friend", even though the programme ceased for good in March. My Jazz preferences don't all come from his influence, but a large proportion do....irreplaceable!

Duncan McKibbin, 26/04/2008 10:38

Very sincere condolences to the family. A great man with so much fun at his command! A true ambassador for jazz in the UK for so many years through his playing and hosting of many significant musical and latterly, comic events.

Chas McDevitt, 26/04/2008 10:37

We're going to miss you Humph. Thank you for all the years of laughter. God bless

Richard Langridge, 26/04/2008 10:37

My wife and I, and I am glad to say my 2 teenage daughters, are huge fans of ISIHAC and so we are all terribly sadden by the news of Humph's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. The years of laughter Mr Lyttelton brought to so many people would be a great testimony to a life but his immense musical talent demonstrates what a wonderful gifted man he was. My wife and I were fortunate enough to see the ISIHAC show in Harrogate just a couple of weeks ago and it was a joy. The affection that the panel had for Mr Lyttelton was reflected and amplified by the warmth of the audience toward him. When I heard the news today, I was sadden greatly and I just hope that those nearest to Humph will find comfort in the knowledge that he brought so much joy, pleasure and laughter to so many millions through his long and full life. Thank you Mr Lyttelton and may God bless you

A great man with a wicked sense of humour. It would be great to see a recording of ISIHAC to come out on dvd as the reaction of the panel compliments the humour. Humph you have brought a great smile to the nation's face and some lovely tunes to the ears. You will be missed. RIP

Humphrey Lyttelton has made me laugh more times than I could possibly remember. I'm Sorry I havn't a Clue can truly be described as life enriching but it would be nothing without 'Chariman Humph'. It was also Humphrey Lyttelton who through his fantastic band introduced me to jazz music, something for which I will be eternally gratetful. I shall never forget hearing him play at St Judes in Hampstead and my meeting with him there. An event in my life I shall treasure. He was a superb composer, musician and comedian and, for my part, shall never be forgotten.

I am so sad at the loss of a man whose compering of ISIHAC was one of the sustaining happinesses of my life. They broke the mould when they made him. Rest in Peace, Humph.

Martin Nichols, 26/04/2008 10:36

Through ISIHAC you gave me some of my funniest memories. You will be dearly missed by millions of fans of your music and radio around the world. May your god bless you and your family.

Kenny Sendel, 26/04/2008 10:35

Thankyou and goodnight!

Jon Hale, 26/04/2008 10:33

RIP Humph. You have given me hours of sheer joy over the years and you will be greatly missed.

Graham Perry, 26/04/2008 10:33

If Britain were a republic, Humph should have been president. I have worked for many years in entertainment but never met him. Like many others, however, one feels an element of relatedness to the truly great pillars of British Broadcasting, and today's news is all the more distressing for that. May I wish the Lyttelton family, the Clue team and his band-members the sympathy of a family of genuine fans. Has anyone seen Lionel Blair?

Christopher Sandeman, 26/04/2008 10:32

Just think of the jam sessions Humph will be sharing with the likes of Louis Armstrong and Nat Gonella! Not to mention the jokes he'll be swapping with Willie Rushton...

Roger Johnson, 26/04/2008 10:32

R.I.P. Humph. What a true gentleman you were.

Andy Deakin, 26/04/2008 10:31

Thank you for all of the jokes and music over the years.

Sarah, 26/04/2008 10:31

I will never forget playing alongside Humph at the Leeds Grand Theatre... Humph on trumpet, me on kazoo. He is very sadly missed Rupert Cooke and family

Rupert Cooke, 26/04/2008 10:31

Such a lovely, honest and supremely talented man. Along with many of my family & friends, I shall miss him as part of the fabric of my life. I remember Humph from the old Conway Hall jazz gigs as a teenager and more recently, in my sixties from the incomparable Clue performances. Look after him for us, Samantha !!

Tom Mahoney, 26/04/2008 10:30

I am deeply saddened by his passing yet hugely grateful for his life. I found him to be an inspirational and very entertaining musician and radio host. I also have a keen interest in calligraphy, so all round he was a such a tremendous and unique role model. My sincere condolences to his family.

Christopher Payne, 26/04/2008 10:30

We only saw him 3 weeks ago in Hammersmith. Jon Naismith even brought his trumpet out which he played and with so much power and skill (although he did sit down to do it!) That was the first standing ovation I've ever seen at "Clue". A marvellously talented and funny man. I know a lot of people who will miss him, I know I will. I just hope the royalties came through in time for him after the wonderfully unrecognisable kazoo rendition of Bad Penny Blues! RIP Humph you darling man. The silliness goes on!

Kate Mawby, 26/04/2008 10:29

Condolences and to Humph's family and close friends. My father Roy is a greater jazzer and an acquanitance of Humph's and had bought a bottle of something suitable for Humph's upcoming birthday. He had been hoping to give it to him tonight after the Cornwall gig. We'll open it instead and raise a large glass to the memory of a great jazzer and a good and witty man. Here's to you, Humph! Thankyou.for the laughs and the music.

Karen Stears, 26/04/2008 10:29

I was so, so sorry to hear this morning that Humph had passed away. I know my partner will be also, as he was able to open up the world of jazz to those who would not regard themselves as jazz fans. Plus, his other persona as a comedian through "I'm sorry". Although he was the compare, he more than stood his ground with the "professional" comics on the program getting just as many, if not more, laughs. I only wish I'd managed to see him in action. He will be dearly, dearly missed and our thoughts go through to those who knew him personally.
