Humph was a true gentleman, a true jazzman, a great broadcaster and a great loss to the nation. May he rest in peace.

What a total shock when I checked the news late on 25 April...such a sad loss. A genial host to one of the funniest comedy programmes I've ever heard the immense pleasure of listening to. Howled out load at all I've heard, and looking forward to getting previous broadcasts. My feelings go out to all who knew him, his family, and friends. My ipod is a much happier machine with the broadcasts of 'ISIHAC' on it.

A truly great and irreplaceable person. I saw him very recently performing with his band, and chairing the wonderful 'Clue'. A giant among men - and an inspiration to us all. His passing will leave a gaping void for so many who loved him.

Thanks for Introducing me to jazz, Humph. My generation, the one after yours, followed you in jazz appreciation. You were the leader. I am profoundly grateful to you for the pleasure I have found in the jazz world that you led me to.
Alan J. Barnes, 26/04/2008 10:51
I have been a constant listener of the program since it started and was lucky enough to see Humph when he was talking about his autobiography in London last year. A signed copy of his book contributed to a celebrity charity auction for my local historic church. I'm sure heaven will be resounding to magnificent trumpet playing. My deep felt condolenscess to the family. A great and iconic man who will be saddly missed.

Bless you Hugh, thank you so much for all the fun and laughter you have given me and millions of others over the years, I'm sure you had no idea of how much you will be missed or how much you were loved by people you had never met. We saw you in Edinburgh on 31st March and I don't think I've ever laughed quite so much in my life. Sending much love to your family and friends, Hayley x

I first remember humph on Clue, but I got to know his Jazz too. Too bad I never saw him play live.

Thanks for the fun and silliness. You were a one-off Humph, and will be forever missed.

I feel so saddened to hear the news about Humph's passing. I have been a fan of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue for many years and listen to it daily on my player as I work. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Jed

I have fond memories of going to Humph's concerts a few decades ago. He had an amiable and warm personality and though I never met him, I feel real sadness at his passing - something I rarely feel for famous people that I have never met. He was truly unique and a giant of jazz. Though it is a sad time, I'm sure Humph would want his fans to celebrate his great contribution to life and the great music and humour he gave us. Garth

My world will never be quite the same without Humph on the radio. He will be very much missed.

Humph was an inspiration to everyone! My father was a huge trad jazz fan and listened to Humph's jazz show every week and for us in the younger generation "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" was weekly confirmation of just how wonderful British radio broadcasting could be!

I Would just like to say Thank You for the wonderful memories that Humph has left my 14yr old daughter, We meet him last year in Southseas Kings Theatre where she told him all about her own musical life. She had just won a Cornet on the BBC Fame Academy Bursary and Humph was so interested in all her story, that when we brought one of his books he did a fantastic cartoon of himself playing the trumpet and signed it for her. He then said that he didn't do it for everyone so treasure it! She is so proud of it that no-one is allowed to touch it so we had to buy her another copy just so she could read it. Humph will be sadly missed but will be playing right next to Nat Gonella in the sky. Rest in peace and your memory lives on in your music!
