Dear Humph, you've been a huge part of my life and given me great pleasure, from seeing you perform at a jazz club somewhere near Croydon circa 1964, to all those times you made me laugh out loud, whilst I was preparing dinner, thank you, thank you, thank you! You were a beacon of light in the slurry pit of existence. Whose sitting on your left hand now? Mwaah Mwaaah!

So so sorry. Humph was like a family member. I introduced my 4 boys to ISIHAC many years ago and he was always the favourite of the team. Always fun and brought us many happy hours listening to the shows on cd. Deepest sympathy to his family.

I missed the story last night, and woke up to the sad news this morning. A great man; you'll be sadly missed. But, I bet they're laughing up there now!

Tommy Donbavand, 26/04/2008 09:41

Really sorry to hear about Humph. Sympathy to his family and his friends, especially the band. But what a legacy he has left behind. All that wonderful music, humour and optimism will continue to be an inspiration to me.

Alison Mcmichael, 26/04/2008 09:40

Our condolances to all Humph's family and friends. We feel very lucky to have shared in the sheer fun that he bought to so many people over the years. We were lucky enough to see the recent ISIHAC show in Edinburgh, a wonderful night. Goodbye Humph and thanks very much.

We are sorry to hear of the death of Humph last nigth and wish to send our condolances to his family at this time. Humph had given us much pleasure over the years listening on the radio with Sorry I Have'nt a Clue. We recently saw him at The Theatre Royal in Plymouth. We were looking forward to having the honour of hostling him tonight, when he was due to give a concert here at Carnglaze. Many of our patrons had asked for their best wishes to be passed on when we had contacted them to initially re-arrange the concert. He will be greatly missed and was truely a giant in the entertainment profession and rightly "A National Treasure".

Very sad to hear of Humph's death last evening. Although I'm not a jazz fan per se, I came to know him through the radio programme I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. He was the most wonderful chairman this show could ever have! I have never laughed at my radio so much!! I know that there was much, much more to the man, his life and his music, but that I leave to others to accolade.

Maggie Hobson, 26/04/2008 09:38

I am absolutely bereft, and like so many of Humph's fans I'm sure, feel as if I have lost a friend, nay relative. But that is nothing compared to what his real family must be feeling at the loss of such a wonderful man and my heart goes out to them at this time. Thank you Humph for making me laugh so much and for so long. So long.

Hugh Wright, 26/04/2008 09:38

Farewell Chairman Humph, thank you for many years of laughter.

With great sadness but with fond memories of a truly great jazzman who kept a great band going until the end . Steeped in the music, the broadest of tastes ( cf. The Best of Jazz) , wonderful chops. .' I'm sorry...' was great fun but it's for the music that I and many, many more will mostly remember him and that at least lives on. Please ask Calligraph to issue and re issue as much as they can. Condolences to family and close friends . He'll be much missed. Thanks for everything , Humph Don Watts

I only discovered the joy and magic of ISIHAC in the past year or two. What a legend... Devastated... R.I.P. Humph.

Humph was a giant, a fabulous musician and a superb broadcaster. He will be sorely missed.

In the dictionary, under comic timing, I will forever expect it to say just two words...Humphrey Lyttelton

Caroline Stewart, 26/04/2008 09:34

Deeply saddened by Humphs demise. The world is a poorer place today. But safe in the knowledge that he is looking down, we will ensure his spirit lives on - and at least we have the recordings. RIP
