There is no greater gift than to bring pleasure and happiness to others; Humphrey Lyttelton did this in spades. He inspired people of all different generations and his life has left the world a richer place. He was a fine jazz musician who inspired listeners, not only in his own playing but also with his radio programs, to explore musicians and genres rarely if at all heard on the airways. He was also a lively but dry humorist as was so brilliantly exhibited on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. He will be remembered.

The world has lost a master craftsman who excelled in so many fields. A genuine person who never lost contact with the grass routes. RIP Humph.

Only a few weeks ago I had the privilege to be Assistant Theatre Manager at The Stables at Wavendon, while Liz stood in for the gorgeous Samantha to take care of Humph's needs backstage. We will treasure our memories of a true gentleman (and idol) and the book he autographed (not signed - he will understand the difference) or us. With affection Chris and Liz Tomlinson

Thank goodness I was fortunate enough to see Humph in his recent visit to Manchester with his Giants Of Jazz... It was such great fun - his enthusiasm infecting the performers and audience alike. He will be so very sadly missed by many more fans than he would probably dare to suppose - and by a huge range of ages too. Who could resist his humour, cheeky twinkle (even in the voice), his incredible and effortless delivery of a baffling array of top quality anecdotes and cartoons? As for I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue..? Well, never has any show enjoyed a more perfect presenter, nor an audience so adored a host. A truly gifted, passionate and charismatic personality. As though this was not sufficient, I am assured by musicians and backstage techs alike that he was a true gentleman and a delight to work with. Not bad for a bit of a legend, I'd have thought. Ah well - I would love to think his last words might have been... MORNINGTON CRESCENT!!! .. but doubtless he would have thought of something better! Off to remenisce amongst my I'm Sorry (etc) CD collection.

Humph was my favourite voice on radio, not just in ISIHAC. Rest in peace Humph, you will be sadly missed.

Emma Sheppard, 26/04/2008 00:50

What a wonderful man. I have listened to ISIHAC since being 'knee-high to a grasshopper' and have felt that Humph had become a dear friend, someone who could make me cry with laughter. His music was inspirational, it came from his soul, as does all good jazz. I am so sad that he has gone, but so glad that when I think of him, I will smile. "and so that's the end of the show" God bless Humph xxxx

What an exemplary jazz musician Humph was. From the very beginning right up to the end he fronted superb bands and never ever compromised his ideals. He was also a fine writer with a wonderfully mischievous sense of humour. He was definitely one of a kind. To paraphrase S.J.Perelman's comment about himself: before they made Humphrey they broke the mold.

He made me laugh so much, when nothing else could. He introduced me to the joys of radio, and was an integral part of my life to date. Thank you Humph, and so long.

A sad loss

Martin, 26/04/2008 00:45

Sad to hear of Humph's passing, but his music will continue in the hearts of his diehard fans. I cut my "rennaisance" jazz teeth on Humph in the 1950s in Tyneside and still regularly play the CDs I now have of him here in New Zealand.

Deric Charlton, 26/04/2008 00:44

I will never forget many hours spent listening to 'haven't a clue' and my introduction to the man's music on Radiohead's Kid A album. Will be sorely missed.

Robson, 26/04/2008 00:41

God bless you Humph. Love to your loved ones.

I feel devastated to hear that Humph has passed on. One of my idols, and I am so grateful to have finally seen him in action last month on the tour. He has brought so much fun to thousands, millions of people. I was planning on seeing James Brown play last year. He died on Christmas day 2006. I was planning to see Luciano Pavarotti this year - he died not 7 months ago. I did finally see Humphrey perform - one might say third time lucky, I'm sure Humph would dismiss being spoken of together with those great entertainers, but that is the level he was at in my eyes, he's brought me years of laughter, and I can't do anything but thank him for it. Here's to you, old boy, I hope you're still having fun.

David Whewell, 26/04/2008 00:41

I've sat here for the last half hour trying to figure out what to write. Like the vast majority of people who will leave a message, I didn't know him personally. But I have have heard him countless times and was fortunate enough to see two recordings of ISIHAC over the last three years. There are not many people who can leave this life in the knowledge that they really have made an impact and will be remembered long after the spirit has departed. Humph is, without doubt, one of these people.

Goz, 26/04/2008 00:40

Suppose I'll just leave the message I've left pretty much everywhere else. Shame the cat didn't pick it up... I'm absolutely devastated at the news of Humph's passing. Clue has become one of my recent favourite programmes, and Humph was like a great big cog in the machinery that included Graeme, Tim, Barry, Jeremy Hardy and that great spanner in the works that is Colin Sell. I'll get to the point - Humph had a really great wit about him that was unique. He always knew when to end a round, or when he'd had enough of the delightful Samantha, which wasn't very often! RIP Humph. You were one in a million. Tell Louis "I told you so!"

Ant, 26/04/2008 00:40

I am in complete shock at this very sad news. Please kindly forward my condolences to Mr Lyttelton's family. I did write to Mr Jon Naismith with a get well message and photo of when Mr Lyttelton and I met at the Royal Free, I do hope he saw it. I asked Humph at the time 'Where do you find the energy? and he replied 'Easy - I love what I do! and it showed. We had such a good night there along with all the other 'Clue nights' around the Country. We will miss him but be thankful for having the chance to spend time in his company. Kind regards Caroline

Caroline Carter, 26/04/2008 00:39

All the best, Humph - you will be sorely missed. What a amazing and versatile talent. Take care, Matthew

Matthew Collins, 26/04/2008 00:38

Humph was truly a legend and will never be forgotten. I will always treasure my signed CD with the doodle of the jazz trumpeter that Humph drew. Thank you, Humph, for all the laughter, music, and joy you have brought to us over the years.

Mike, 26/04/2008 00:38

Thank you for all the joy you have brought me listening to Sorry I haven't a Clue. I'm not sure any of us will have a clue without you.
