Reviews:

this odd memoir is pitch perfect, and utterly its own                   The Times, 28 July 2007

In the end though, it is hard to beat the recollections of an 85-year old who devotes himself to elegant prose, who delivers impeccable anecdotes and who doesn't flinch from his hard times. The book could go on for ever, with its mixture of self-effacement and justifiable pride. But one of the book's strengths is its brevity. It has a winning lack of structure that makes it perfect to pick up and plonk down at the bedside - a structure he explains by saying of this thoughts, "There's no butler of the mind to usher them in - no mostly they wander in and out of the room uninvited, like children, cats and hospital cleaners.” ...we should hope for a follow-up soon!!

Humph... lets his guard down in a book that closely resembles a series of friendly fireside chats. This remarkable book perhaps draws us closer to Humphrey Lyttelton than any before!
